Adult Education

Inspired by the work of the Tikvah 2020 Lifelong Learning Workgroup, we are looking forward to a revival of adult education at Ohavi Zedek.   As the Tikvah 2020 preliminary report says, “Ohavi Zedek has always provided adult education offerings. However, expanding and strengthening those offerings is critical to meeting our vision for Lifelong Learning and for reaching out to more members of our community. In the absence of a functioning Adult Education Committee it has been difficult to move forward. The addition of volunteers and a structured committee should help.”

During the coming year we plan to continue our two weekly Torah study groups and Hebrew language class.  If there is interest, we will begin another introductory Hebrew class.  Rabbi Joshua and Rabbi David are planning to teach a class together in the thought of Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, and Rabbi Joshua will be offering an Introduction to Judaism class, in addition to the one-on-one teaching he does with individuals studying for conversion.

With the revitalization of the Adult Education Committee, we expect to act upon suggestions for various single session and short term adult education programming utilizing the knowledge and talents of OZ clergy, staff and members. In particular, programming that deals with specific stages of the Jewish life cycle and programming that deals with the various holidays on the Jewish calendar.  We also hope to develop and expand upon existing co-operation among OZ, Temple Sinai, UVM, Chabad and Israel Center of Vermont in publicizing one another’s educational offerings and welcoming participants from throughout the community to one another’s programs.
