This course looks at the modern history of American involvement with the Korean peninsula. Beginning with the experience of Korea under Japanese rule in the early 20th century, the class will explore the World War II era, the division of Korea, the early Cold War, the 1950-1953 Korean War, the late Cold War, and the North Korean nuclear program, among other topics. Through seven weekly sessions, the focus will be on trying to shed light on the current tensions between Pyongyang and Washington, as well as the complexities of the military, political and economic situation in northern Asia.
