War and the Environment: Ethics Under Fire

This seven-week class explores the historical and contemporary intersection of the demands of environmental ethics and the imperatives of armed conflict. Starting with the ancient world, where taking advantage of the environment resulted in punishment or destruction, the course looks at the overall impact of war on the environment, and how different societies have dealt with the ethical implications of that impact. Topics will include direct, indirect, intentional and unintentional environmental effects, as well as how current environmental ethics intersect with warfare­including their impact within the context of the situation in Israel and the Middle East. Member/Non-member class fees $15.00/$20.00
