Lunch and Learn // Artists & the Holocaust: Documentation, Memory, Elegy // Mar. 20, 2025
March 20 @ 12:00 pm - 1:15 pm

Janie Cohen, past Director of UVM’s Fleming Museum, will present a slide talk on the work of four artists who experienced the Holocaust, and the ways it impacted their work. Included are Anselm Kiefer and Christian Boltanski, both born late in WWII; Henryk Ross, who clandestinely photographed life in the Lodz ghetto while serving as the Jewish Council’s official photographer; and Hannelore Baron, a New York artist who witnessed Kristallnacht as a child and escaped Germany with her family.
Should people wish to take a look at Ross’s or Baron’s work prior to or following my talk:
- Here is Baron’s Estate website: http://hannelorebaron.net/
- For Henryk Ross’s work: http://agolodzghetto.com/
- Anselm Kiefer and Christian Boltanski are readily findable on the web.
Note: this Lunch & Learn talk was videotaped by CCTV / Town Meeting TV and can be viewed on their website.

About OZ’s Lunch and Learns:
In-Person in the Ohavi Zedek’s Social Hall. No Zoom unless conditions change, but a number of Lunch & Learns will be filmed by CCTV for posting 2 to 3 weeks after the event on the cctv.org web site — when on their site search for “Ohavi Zedek”.
Speakers cover a wide range of topics. A delicious lunch will be offered, which is served promptly at NOON. The talks begin at about 12:15pm and end no later than 1:15pm (including some time for Q&A).
Suggested cash contribution of $10 for food can be paid on the registration form or collected at the event — but feel free to give more or less. Please also consider sponsoring one or more Lunch & Learn to help cover expenses. Information on this is on the registration page.
