Lunch And Learn- The Magic Portal and the “Beholder’s Share” with Michael Strauss

May 16, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Mark your calendars for May 16, and attend the Lunch and Learn event featuring UVM Professor Emeritus Michael Strauss. The presentation, “The Magic Portal and the Beholder’s Share,” will focus on the creation and viewing of art. The Magic Portal refers to the three-dimensional image we see in representational drawings and paintings, while the Beholder’s Share pertains to how our life experiences affect our understanding of art when we view it.

Whether you’re an art professional or student, attempting to create such an image on paper or canvas involves all three components of grounded cognition – seeing, moving your hand, and feeling your way across the surface. Creating art from observation can be a difficult process, and it exposes how little we understand about what we perceive.

In this presentation you will learn how artists create the illusion of three-dimensionality on a two-dimensional surface and how your life experiences as a viewer affect its meaning.

It is my pleasure to announce that Wayne Senville has graciously consented to take over the
reins at Lunch & Learn, the once-a-month program that I have been honored to chair since
2007. It was time for a change, and Wayne is eminently qualified to step in and continue to
seek out speakers and presentations that reflect our Jewish and community interests.
Wayne, who holds a law degree and a Master’s in City Planning, came to Vermont in 1988 with
his family to accept the position of Director of Local and Regional Planning Assistance in the VT
Dept. of Housing and Community Affairs. He subsequently founded a citizen planners journal,
which gained nationwide readership, and was the recipient of many awards and honors in the
planning field. Attuned to social justice, both he and his wife, Lila Shapero, continue to have an
active voice in neighborhood and community issues, and beyond. Wayne himself was a Lunch &
Learn presenter in 2008 (“Across America on Route 50: Conversations with Citizens and
Planners on the State of Our Cities & Towns) and again in 2019 (“How the 1903 Kishinev
Pogrom Shocked the World”). Look for an exciting L&L series in 2022/23, with innovative ideas, including panel discussions. A shift from Thursdays to Tuesdays, too!
