The Sara Frank Chapter of Hadassah book group in Burlington, VT meets monthly at 7:30 PM to discuss books with Jewish content. Meetings are informal and held at each others’ homes weekday evenings. BOOK- Last Days in Babylon by Marina Benjamin
SYNOPSIS-Benjamin delves into the story of her family’s life among the Jews of Iraq in the first half of the twentieth century. When Iraq gained independence in 1932 from the Ottoman Empire, Jews were the largest and most prosperous ethnic group in Baghdad. But with the creation of the state of Israel came the first stirrings of antisemitism. Eventually the author’s grandmother, Regina Sehayek and her family, were forced to leave Iraq via a hair-raising escape. 336 pp. 2008
