May 25, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

The A. Pearly and Edith C. Feen Lecture Series presents

You Never Call, You Never Write: The Historical Legacy of American Jewish Mothers
Dr. Joyce Antler and her daughter, Lauren Antler, What to Wear When Fighting the Patriarchy: Lessons from a Jewish
Feminist Daughter. CLICK HERE FOR FLYER.

Lecture: Dr. Joyce Antler

The Jewish Mother is one of the best-known figures in popular culture. This talk traces the evolution of the “Yiddish Mama” as popularized by Sophie Tucker and Gertrude Berg’s “Molly Goldberg,” to the colossal “monster” mother mocked by Philip Roth and Woody Allen, through present day re-interpretations. Continually reinvented, the nagging “Jewish mother”-like today’s intrusive “helicopter mother”-provides a unique lens with which to examine cultural views about Jewish families.

Performance:  Lauren Antler

What to Wear When You’re Fighting the Patriarchy: Lessons from a Jewish Feminist Daughter

From bawdy vaudeville comedians to the adorable Gilda Radner, Jewish women have left an enduring mark on the American comic tradition-a traditions that has included a legacy of mother-mocking. In this presentation, Antler’s daughter Lauren will turn the old standard on its head as she explores her relationship with her Jewish mother and with feminism.
