SUMMARY:ChaiLights - Group Action Day: Hebrew Holy Society Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:October 2\, we will meet at the Hebrew Holy Society Cemetery at 319 Patchen Road at 10:15 am.  We will do some light clean up work with other volunteers from the community\, and learn about Vermont Jewish history.  This event will be hosted by Shimmy Cohen\, who has cared for OZ cemeteries for years\, and Jason Stuffle\, a preschool parent who during the pandemic has become a DIY gravestone cleaner (we’ll see the progress of his work on one of the oldest burial sites in the cemetery). Note that there are two cemeteries on Patchen Road\, and the map location on the event listing has the exact cemetery location.  Park in the circular drive near the flag pole.  Bring gloves\, rakes and a tarp if possible. \nIf the weather is not accommodating\, we will meet at OZ and do a project in the kitchen. \nAbout ChaiLights\nThis fall\, OZ will be serving bagels\, coffee and tea\, with fun/social group experiences for adults! \nBeginning September 11th\, ten weekly ChaiLights gatherings will give you a chance to learn a little\, taste a little\, share a little\, maybe even schvitz (sweat!) a little while connecting with others. \nEach gathering will start off with food and open conversation\, followed by a unique experience that will engage and inspire\, let us create and improve the world. SUMMARY:Reverse Tashlich Waterway Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:Join our inagural Burlington Reverse Tashlich\, where we will be cleaning the Pine Street Barge Canal.   \nWhat’s a Reverse Tashlich?!  Well\, in the traditional Tashlich\, we symbolicaly ‘cast our sins’ – throwing crumbs of bread into a body of water as part of the Rosh Hashanah riturals.  In a ‘Reverse Tashlich’\, we join 240+ other communities in a new traditional of cleaning up a body of water. Read more about the movement here. \nPlease arrive a little beforehand and park in the parking lot of Dealer.com (1 Howard St\, Burlington VT\, 05401) and walk over the land across the street. We will start with a short ritual about caring for the earth right at 2:00 near the canal and then walk to the area of the site to start cleaning. \nWear sturdy shoes\, long pants\, and long sleeves to protect from the possible risk of poison ivy. Bring gloves and eye protection if you have them. If not\, there will be extra gloves there. The risk of exposure will be reduced as our hosts will cut a trail before we arrive. When you arrive home\, carefully take off your clothes and wash them before re-wearing them. Leave your shoes out for a few days to air out. \nChildren ages 8 and older are welcome. Not an ideal site for younger children.
