SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn // The Kurdish-led Local Democracy Revolution in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:// An Illustrated Talk by Author and Translator Janet Biehl\nGraduation day at the women’s academy in Raqqa\, a place where ISIS once sold women it captured as sex slaves. Janet Biehl in back row center wearing scarf. \nDuring the war against the Islamic State (from 2014)\, the U.S.-led coalition coordinated with Kurdish-led ground forces to defeat ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Almost unreported in U.S. media\, those Kurdish fighters represented a new society in northeastern Syria that\, since 2012\, had been advancing gender equality\, religious and ethnic inclusivity\, and bottom-up democracy. \nThis astonishingly progressive revolutionary project\, which continues to this day\, was inspired in great part by the writings of a Jewish Vermonter\, the late Murray Bookchin (d. 2006). His close friend and colleague Janet Biehl tells the story. \nRecommended pre- or post-talk article from the HuffPost: \n\nAmerica’s Best Allies Against ISIS Are Inspired By A Bronx-Born Libertarian Socialist — Syrian Kurds have launched an unlikely radical experiment in governance without hierarchy\, patriarchy or capitalism. \nSee also this quite interesting article from the New York Times: With Fire and Song\, Kurds in Turkey Hail the Start of Spring. March 21\, 2026. \n\nThe valiant fighters of the YPJ\, the Women’s Protection Units\, who helped defeat ISIS in Syria in 2014-2019. Janet Biehl is in the center of the back row. \n  \nPlease Register Here to Help Us Plan \n\nAbout OZ’s Lunch and Learns: \nSpeakers cover a wide range of topics. A delicious lunch will be offered\, which is served promptly at NOON. The talks begin at about 12:15pm and end no later than 1:15pm (including some time for Q&A). \nSuggested cash contribution of $10 for food can be paid on the registration form or collected at the event — but feel free to give more or less. Please also consider being a sponsor of one or more Lunch & Learn talks. Information on this is on Lunch & Learn talk registration pages\, or contact OZ Program & Engagement Manager Evan Rose at: 802-864-0218 ext 801. \n\n\n 2025-2026 Series of Lunch and Learn Talks: Thursday\, September 18\, 2025: Jewish Life & Antisemitism in Today's Germany // a talk by UVM Professor Alan Steinweis Thursday\, October 16\, 2025: Working to Advance Legal Protections for Animals // a talk by Animal Law lawyer Laura Ireland Thursday\, November 20\, 2025: From Berlin to Hollywood: the life and times of Ernst Lubitsch\, Fritz Lang\, and Billy Wilder // a talk\, with film clips\, by UVM Lane Series Director Natalie Neuert Thursday\, December 18\, 2025: An Introduction to the Me2 Orchestra // a presentation by Orchestra Manager and Cellist Phoenix Crockett Thursday\, January 15\, 2026: Supporting Kids & Families -- the Work of the Boys & Girls Club of Burlington // an illustrated talk by Executive Director Tanya Benosky Thursday\, February 19\, 2026: Volunteers Helping People Seeking Asylum // An Introduction by CASAN Board Members Jan Steinbauer and Kim Watkin Thursday\, March 26\, 2026: The Kurdish-led Local Democracy Revolution in the Middle East // an illustrated talk by author and translator Janet Biehl Thursday\, April 16\, 2026: Jewish Traditions in Classical Choral Music // an exploration by Musicologist & Choral Conductor Nathaniel G. SUMMARY:Interfaith Family Conversations
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of an ongoing series of periodic gatherings of people in interfaith families or relationships*. The goal is to create space for couples or individuals from interfaith families to connect\, learn and support each other. This event is for Jewish and/or ‘adjacent’ individuals of any religious background. \nWe will meet Thursday\, March 26\, at 5:30 to 7:00 pm for a guided small group ‘check-in\,’ followed by a facilitated discussion about the interfaith family experience. Given the timing around Easter and Passover\, one conversation starter will be on navigating the holidays for interfaith families. \nThis program will be facilitated by Rachel Jolly. \nWe will work to provide childcare for those who register at least one week in advance. \nClick Here to Register \n*By interfaith families\, we are referring to folks who are part of families or relationships in which one party is Jewish and another is not. This includes those in multi-heritage families. Those who are Jews by choice are welcome as well. We learn from a diverse set of participants!

SUMMARY:Minyan (Online Evening)
DESCRIPTION:Ohavi Zedek offers regular minyan services to meet the worship needs of our community and especially to aid those members of our community who are reciting Kaddish in memory of a recently deceased loved one or on a Yahrzeit. Services are held Sunday-Thursday evenings at 7:00 on Zoom. Ohavi Zedek’s minyan is traditional and egalitarian. Mincha and Maariv are recited at evening services when the services begin before dark\, only Ma’ariv is recited once we reach the point in the year when services start after dark. We also hold Sunday Shacharit at 8:45 AM in person and on Zoom. \nIf you are planning to attend a service to recite Kaddish please fill out this form to let us know so we can make sure there is a minyan present. \nClick here to access the Weekday Siddur Lev Shalem used during our evening Minyan services. \nZoom link is below under the heading ‘Website’. \nPlease make your full first and last name viewable on Zoom\, so we know who you are and can admit you. \nResources: \nWhen Should I Say Kaddish for Yahrzeit? \nThe Mourner’s Kaddish: A Memorial Prayer in Praise of God by My Jewish Learning \n  \n
