SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn // Jewish Traditions in Classical Choral Music
DESCRIPTION:// An Exploration by Musicologist & Choral Conductor Nathaniel G. Lew\nSalomon Sulzer. Public domain\, via Wikimedia Commons \nOn May 30th and 31st\, the Vermont Choral Union will present concerts in Burlington titled Avodath Hakodesh – Four Hundred Years of Jewish Sacred Music. The repertory includes choral works by liturgical composers Salomon Sulzer and Louis Lewandowsi\, other Jewish composers such as Salmone Rossi and Leonard Bernstein\, and composers from outside the Jewish tradition. \nTaking the pieces on the VCU program as examples\, musicologist and choral conductor Nathaniel G. Lew will explore what makes music “classical\,” “Jewish\,” “sacred\,” and “liturgical.” We will listen to examples and examine issues such as the status of choral singing in Jewish tradition and the role of the Book of Psalms in Jewish and non-Jewish religious practice. The talk will stand on its own\, and will also serve as preparation for what promise to be fascinating performances. \nHaving served as a Professor of Music at Saint Michael’s College for 23 years\, Nathaniel G. Lew is currently Choral Director at the University of Vermont\, Artistic Director of Counterpoint Chorus\, and Chorus Master of the Opera Company of Middlebury. \n\n  \nPlease Register Here to Help Us Plan \n\nAbout OZ’s Lunch and Learns: \nSpeakers cover a wide range of topics. A delicious lunch will be offered\, which is served promptly at NOON. The talks begin at about 12:15pm and end no later than 1:15pm (including some time for Q&A). \nSuggested cash contribution of $10 for food can be paid on the registration form or collected at the event — but feel free to give more or less. Please also consider being a sponsor of one or more Lunch & Learn talks. Information on this is on Lunch & Learn talk registration pages\, or contact OZ Program & Engagement Manager Evan Rose at: 802-864-0218 ext 801. \n\n\n 2025-2026 Series of Lunch and Learn Talks: Thursday\, September 18\, 2025: Jewish Life & Antisemitism in Today's Germany // a talk by UVM Professor Alan Steinweis Thursday\, October 16\, 2025: Working to Advance Legal Protections for Animals // a talk by Animal Law lawyer Laura Ireland Thursday\, November 20\, 2025: From Berlin to Hollywood: the life and times of Ernst Lubitsch\, Fritz Lang\, and Billy Wilder // a talk\, with film clips\, by UVM Lane Series Director Natalie Neuert Thursday\, December 18\, 2025: An Introduction to the Me2 Orchestra // a presentation by Orchestra Manager and Cellist Phoenix Crockett Thursday\, January 15\, 2026: Supporting Kids & Families -- the Work of the Boys & Girls Club of Burlington // an illustrated talk by Executive Director Tanya Benosky Thursday\, February 19\, 2026: Volunteers Helping People Seeking Asylum // An Introduction by CASAN Board Members Jan Steinbauer and Kim Watkin Thursday\, March 26\, 2026: The Kurdish-led Local Democracy Revolution in the Middle East // an illustrated talk by author and translator Janet Biehl Thursday\, April 16\, 2026: Jewish Traditions in Classical Choral Music // an exploration by Musicologist & Choral Conductor Nathaniel G. SUMMARY:Minyan (Online Evening)
DESCRIPTION:Ohavi Zedek offers regular minyan services to meet the worship needs of our community and especially to aid those members of our community who are reciting Kaddish in memory of a recently deceased loved one or on a Yahrzeit. Services are held Sunday-Thursday evenings at 7:00 on Zoom. Ohavi Zedek’s minyan is traditional and egalitarian. Mincha and Maariv are recited at evening services when the services begin before dark\, only Ma’ariv is recited once we reach the point in the year when services start after dark. We also hold Sunday Shacharit at 8:45 AM in person and on Zoom. \nIf you are planning to attend a service to recite Kaddish please fill out this form to let us know so we can make sure there is a minyan present. \nClick here to access the Weekday Siddur Lev Shalem used during our evening Minyan services. \nZoom link is below under the heading ‘Website’. \nPlease make your full first and last name viewable on Zoom\, so we know who you are and can admit you. \nResources: \nWhen Should I Say Kaddish for Yahrzeit? \nThe Mourner’s Kaddish: A Memorial Prayer in Praise of God by My Jewish Learning \n  \n
