DESCRIPTION:Ohavi Zedek offers regular minyan services to meet the worship needs of our community and especially to aid those members of our community who are reciting Kaddish in memory of a recently deceased loved one or on a Yahrzeit. Services are held Sunday-Thursday evenings at 7:00 on Zoom. Ohavi Zedek’s minyan is traditional and egalitarian. Mincha and Maariv are recited at evening services when the services begin before dark\, only Ma’ariv is recited once we reach the point in the year when services start after dark. We also hold Sunday Shacharit at 8:45 AM in person and on Zoom. \nIf you are planning to attend a service to recite Kaddish please fill out this form to let us know so we can make sure there is a minyan present. \nClick here to access the Weekday Siddur Lev Shalem used during our evening Minyan services. \nZoom link is below under the heading ‘Website’. \nPlease make your full first and last name viewable on Zoom\, so we know who you are and can admit you.

Our time together this year includes member-led generative workshops\, options for structured conversation about being Jewish poets here and now\, about aesthetic and spiritual approaches to poetry\, and an interactive workshop on an aspect of craft. \n  \nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED \n  \nOpen to all Vermont poets who self-identify as Jewish \n\nBeth Jacob Synagogue is wheelchair accessible\, microphones will be used \n\nMore information: judyburlington@gmail.com \n  \n\nWhat to expect:\nMorning workshop: Playful Expression by Judith Taylor\nTwo ideas inform this expressive exercise. \nOne is from Jane Hirshfield:\nEncounter with the unknown seems almost a nutrient in human life… The trick then is discovering how much\, and when\, to admit the random\, chaotic\, unknowable into our lives… This is where transformations lie. \nThe other is from Stanley Kunitz:\nIn a sense\, all creativity is a process of giving meaning to what is on a universal scale meaningless. \nOur days are filled with mysteries and creative challenges. How we respond to them reveals something about who we are\, how we live our lives\, and how we do the work that’s ours to do. One way of engaging with these opportunities is through play\, which is at the heart of creativity. This workshop is an invitation to explore the possible ways that mystery and play can deepen our self-knowledge and the poems that we make. \nRound-robin readings: bring one poem to read aloud to the group  \nBYO brown bag lunch\, fruit and water supplied \nBook swap\, your own or books you’d like to trade  \nBrowse samples of people’s other creative expressions that feed their poetry \nSchmooze and move around \nAfternoon Structured Conversation Options: \n\nBeing a Jewish Poet now: facilitated by Zelda Alpern\nWhat does it mean to you to be Jewish and a writer of poetry at this moment? How does being Jewish influence your writing? How are you currently relating to/grappling with your Jewish identity? How does this show up or not show up in your poems? Depending on the size of the group\, we may practice some structured listening exercises.\nApproaching A Poem: led by TBD\nUsing a collection of quotations about poetry from many sources\, we’ll discuss which ones ring a bell for us\, puzzle us\, delight us\, or annoy us. How might they influence the poems we might write? Quotations compiled by Judith Taylor\n\nAfternoon Craft Workshop led by Ivy Schweitzer \nIvy Schweitzer is the author of Dividing Rivers: Poems\, from Finishing Line Press\, 2025.  \nAn interactive workshop to delve into the basics of repetition in poetry. We will discuss examples of repetition in content and form and try our hands at a poem that uses repetition. You might bring a line or two of poetry to the workshop (original or from a poem you love) that you might want to develop. \n

DESCRIPTION:Discover the joy of Jewish music\, movement\, and community. \nIsraeli dance is one vibrant expression of the broader tradition of Jewish folk dance. It brings people together through lively music\, shared movement\, and a welcoming community. It is easy to start and difficult to stop! Along the way\, you’ll enjoy an activity that’s great for both your body and your brain. \nWhether you’ve danced for years or are taking your very first steps\, you’ll find a warm\, encouraging community ready to welcome you. \nNo partner or previous experience is needed. New dancers are encouraged to arrive at the beginning of the session\, when we’ll introduce the basic steps before gradually building to more advanced dances throughout the evening. \nJoin hosts Mitch\, Lani\, and Miriam and a friendly group of dancers who gather twice each month in person and weekly on Zoom. \nFree to attend. Optional $5 donation appreciated. \nInterested but can’t make this session?
