DESCRIPTION:Yom Kippur\, the Day of Atonement\, is the holiest day of the Jewish year. It is an invitation to return—to the people we love\, to the values that guide us\, to our truest selves\, and\, for many\, to God. \n \nAs our community gathers on this sacred morning\, we continue the journey that began with Kol Nidre through inspiring music\, heartfelt prayer\, Torah reading\, and reflection. Together we embrace the sacred work of teshuvah—often translated as “return“—seeking forgiveness\, repairing relationships\, and recommitting ourselves to lives of compassion\, purpose\, and hope. \nWhether Yom Kippur has been part of your life for decades or you’re experiencing it for the first time\, we hope you’ll find a place of meaning\, connection\, and hope. \nWhat Makes This Service Special \n\nRabbi Ariel’s Yom Kippur Sermon – A thoughtful exploration of teshuvah (return)\, forgiveness\, hope\, and living with intention.\nTorah Reading & Musaf – The morning includes the Torah reading and Musaf\, an additional prayer service observed on Shabbat and Jewish holidays that deepens our worship on this holiest day of the year.\nYizkor Memorial Service – We will gather for Yizkor\, our sacred time of remembrance for loved ones who have died. Through prayer\, reflection\, and memory\, we honor those whose lives continue to shape our own. Anticipated around 11:15 a.m. those coming specifically for Yizkor are encouraged to arrive early.\n\nWhy Yom Kippur?\nYom Kippur reminds us that change is possible. It invites us to pause the busyness of daily life\, repair what has been broken\, deepen our relationships\, and return to the people and values that matter most. \nChildren & Families\nChildren are always welcome in our sanctuary. Families with young children are warmly invited to participate in our Yom Kippur Family Experience – Tots (0-5) and Yom Kippur Family Service – Kids (6-12)\, offered alongside the main service. \nNeed a quieter place to worship or take a break? You’re welcome to use our Samuelson-Saiger Sanctuary\, where the service is livestreamed\, or visit our Library Sensory & Quiet Room. \nFasting\nMany Jewish adults observe Yom Kippur by fasting as an expression of reflection and spiritual focus. \nJewish tradition also teaches that protecting one’s health comes first. Children\, those with medical conditions\, pregnant or nursing individuals\, and others for whom fasting would be unhealthy are encouraged not to fast or to modify the fast as needed. \nThroughout the day\, our kitchen offers light refreshments for anyone who is unable to fast. Please don’t hesitate to care for yourself. \nHow to Attend:\nHigh Holiday services are open to everyone. Services are free for Ohavi Zedek members\, young adults under 30\, and children. Tickets are required for other adult guests. Please register in advance. SUMMARY:Yom Kippur Family Experience – Tots (Ages 0–5)
DESCRIPTION:Share the meaning and beauty of Yom Kippur with your little one in a warm\, interactive service created especially for young children and the grown-ups who love them. Through music\, movement\, storytelling\, simple prayers\, and hands-on experiences\, families will explore themes of kindness\, gratitude\, forgiveness\, and caring for one another in ways that are engaging\, meaningful\, and fun. \n \nThis year’s Family Experience will be led by Gigi Weisman. These services will be filled with music\, stories and movement while holding the intentions of the holiday. We welcome all children to participate at the rate and pace that is just right for them. Gigi is a children’s entertainer\, social coach and educational consultant. She also leads the Ohavi Zedek Singing Circles. \nAt Ohavi Zedek\, we believe children belong at the heart of Jewish life. Little voices\, curious questions\, wiggly bodies\, and joyful laughter are all part of the experience. Whether your family is discovering Yom Kippur for the first time or continuing a cherished tradition\, you’ll find a welcoming community where everyone can grow\, learn\, and celebrate together. \nWhat to Expect\nJoyful music and singing\nInteractive storytelling\nAge-appropriate prayers and blessings\nMovement and hands-on participation\nA relaxed\, welcoming environment for young families \nThe Yom Kippur Family Experience is free for all families. Children and adults will learn side by side\, creating meaningful conversations and memories that can continue long after the holidays. \nAt Ohavi Zedek\, we believe children belong at the heart of Jewish life. Questions\, conversation\, laughter\, and participation are all part of the experience. DESCRIPTION:As the sun begins to set on Yom Kippur\, we gather for the final chapter in our journey of teshuvah—often translated as “return.” Through prayer\, the timeless story of Jonah\, the moving service of Ne’ilah\, Havdalah\, and the final blast of the shofar\, we prepare to carry the lessons of this sacred day into the year ahead. \n \nWhat Makes This Journey Special \nMinchah\nOur afternoon begins with Minchah\, the traditional afternoon prayer service\, inviting us once again into prayer\, reflection\, and return. \nThe Book of Jonah\nWe hear the biblical story of Jonah—a story of running\, returning\, forgiveness\, and second chances. Read each Yom Kippur\, Jonah reminds us that transformation is always possible and that compassion often extends farther than we imagine. \nNe’ilah Awards (Tentatively at 6pm)\nAs part of our Ne’ilah service\, we recognize a longtime member of the Ohavi Zedek community whose dedication and service have made a lasting impact on congregational life. This annual tradition celebrates the people whose commitment helps our community thrive. \nNe’ilah – The Closing Service\nAs sunset approaches\, we gather for Ne’ilah (“closing”)\, the final and most emotionally powerful service of Yom Kippur. Jewish tradition imagines the gates of this sacred day slowly closing as we offer one last opportunity for prayer\, reflection\, and return. \nHavdalah\, Community Shofar Wave and the Final Shofar\nWe conclude Yom Kippur with Havdalah\, a beautiful ceremony that marks the transition from the holiness of the day back into everyday life. Together we’ll bless the wine and prepare for one final\, unforgettable moment. \nThis year\, we invite everyone who knows how to blow a shofar to bring their own and take part in our Community Shofar Wave. Shofar blowers will line the sanctuary from back to front\, creating a wave of sound that moves through the congregation before culminating in the final tekiah gedolah (long blast). Whether you’re holding a shofar or simply listening\, this powerful moment reminds us that each of us has a voice\, and together we create something far greater than any one of us could alone. \nFollowing the final shofar\, we will officially conclude the fast after the appearance of three stars in the evening sky—a traditional sign that Yom Kippur has come to a close. Our clergy and volunteers will watch for the stars\, and we anticipate concluding the service and beginning our Community Break-the-Fast at approximately 7:35 p.m.\, though the exact timing follows this longstanding Jewish tradition. \nDuring the afternoon service before Ne’ilah\, there will be an opportunity for congregants to come forward to the Ark for a meaningful personal moment of reflection and prayer with the Torah scrolls. \nChildren & Families\nChildren are warmly invited to participate in the Torah Processional and sharing in carrying one of our plush Torahs. If your child would like to join the procession\, we’d be delighted to include them. No sign up is necessary. Just arrive at and line up in the preschool hallway at 5:45 PM. \nFasting\nYom Kippur is traditionally observed as a fast day. Whether you’ve been with us throughout Yom Kippur or are joining us just for the evening\, you’ll find a warm welcome and good company around the table. \nThere’s something special about sharing this first meal together. After spending the day reflecting as individuals and praying as a community\, we gather once more—not in the sanctuary\, but around the table—to celebrate the close of the High Holidays and the beginning of a new year together. \nJoin Us\nEveryone who has registered for Yom Kippur is warmly invited to stay for our Community Break-the-Fast.
