See this article for more information. \nJoin hosts Adele\, Lani and Mitch and a friendly friendly group of people that gathers periodically on Zoom or in person to enjoy the folkdances of Israel! \nWe mostly dance around a circle so no partner is required. We have a large repertoire of beginner-friendly dances. New dancers are encouraged to come at the beginning of the session to benefit from instruction. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nNonviolence: The History of a Dangerous Idea by Mark Kurlansky \nIn this timely\, highly original\, and controversial narrative\, New York Times bestselling author Mark Kurlansky discusses nonviolence as a distinct entity\, a course of action\, rather than a mere state of mind. Nonviolence can and should be a technique for overcoming social injustice and ending wars\, he asserts\, which is why it is the preferred method of those who speak truth to power. Nonviolence is a sweeping yet concise history that moves from ancient Hindu times to present-day conflicts raging in the Middle East and elsewhere. Kurlansky also brings into focus just why nonviolence is a “dangerous” idea\, and asks such provocative questions as: Is there such a thing as a “just war”? Often called Chesed Shel Emet (True Kindness)\, this is considered the highest form of mitzvah because it is a favor that can never be returned. \nWe will discuss how this ancient practice honors the soul and ensures that no member of our community ever takes their final journey alone. YIVO’s Poland vs. Holocaust History series examines these dynamics and situates the Polish case within a broader European context. \nThis lecture by Jan Grabowski will examine the phenomenon of Holocaust distortion in Poland within a broader comparative European framework. It explores how historical narratives about the Holocaust are reshaped\, minimized\, or selectively reinterpreted in public discourse\, politics\, education\, and law. Particular attention will be paid to the interaction between state-sponsored memory policies\, nationalist narratives\, and scholarly research\, as well as to the pressures faced by historians and educators. By comparing developments in Poland with those in other European countries—including Hungary\, Lithuania\, Germany\, and Russia—the lecture highlights both shared patterns and national specificities in confronting difficult pasts. Janet Biehl in back row center wearing scarf. \nDuring the war against the Islamic State (from 2014)\, the U.S.-led coalition coordinated with Kurdish-led ground forces to defeat ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Almost unreported in U.S. media\, those Kurdish fighters represented a new society in northeastern Syria that\, since 2012\, had been advancing gender equality\, religious and ethnic inclusivity\, and bottom-up democracy. \nThis astonishingly progressive revolutionary project\, which continues to this day\, was inspired in great part by the writings of a Jewish Vermonter\, the late Murray Bookchin (d. 2006).
