There\, they’re sold into coercive marriages and domestic\, agricultural or sexual slavery. Disoriented\, most lack the language\, means and skills to escape. His stories have been widely published in literary magazines and journals\, and he received a Pushcart Prize nomination for short fiction. His mystery novels Diehard Fan and Death in the Jingle Jungle are available on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble. \nDavid Schein was lucky to go to Burlington High School in the mid-60s where he encountered writing teacher Gladys Colburn and theater teacher Margaret O’Brien whom he credits with setting him on his course. He spent many years in the San Francisco\, New York and Chicago theater and poetry scenes. David wrote for\, and performed and toured with Whoopi Goldberg as her star was rising. He lived in Tijuana\, where he wrote and recorded for NPR with performance artist\, Guillermo Gomez-Peña. He has worked extensively in Germany and Ethiopia — where\, with a troupe of street kids\, he founded One Love AIDS/HIV Awareness Theater. While there\, Naomi was able to get a first-hand sense of everyday life during these challenging times. Her visit included volunteering; visiting Hostage Square; and having lots of conversation and cooking with her son who is currently serving with the IDF on Israel’s northern border. Naomi will share her experiences and photos. \n*** and *** \nOZ’s Participation in the ADL’s “Kulanu” Antisemitism Program & How You Can Be Involved. A short informational presentation by Lila Shapero. \nOZ member Lila Shapero is helping coordinate the synagogue’s participation in Kulanu\, a program sponsored by the ADL that aims to empower OZ (and other participating synagogues) in combatting antisemitism. Lila will give you an overview of Kulanu\, and explain how you can be involved. \nAs usual\, lunch by chef Valerie Philmus will be served promptly at NOON\, with the talks (including time for some Q&A) running from 12:15 till about 1pm. It was time for a change\, and Wayne is eminently qualified to step in and continue to\nseek out speakers and presentations that reflect our Jewish and community interests.\nWayne\, who holds a law degree and a Master’s in City Planning\, came to Vermont in 1988 with\nhis family to accept the position of Director of Local and Regional Planning Assistance in the VT\nDept. of Housing and Community Affairs. He subsequently founded a citizen planners journal\,\nwhich gained nationwide readership\, and was the recipient of many awards and honors in the\nplanning field. Attuned to social justice\, both he and his wife\, Lila Shapero\, continue to have an\nactive voice in neighborhood and community issues\, and beyond. Wayne himself was a Lunch &\nLearn presenter in 2008 (“Across America on Route 50: Conversations with Citizens and \nPlanners on the State of Our Cities & Towns”) and again in 2019 (“How the 1903 Kishinev\nPogrom Shocked the World”). It was time for a change\, and Wayne is eminently qualified to step in and continue to\nseek out speakers and presentations that reflect our Jewish and community interests.\nWayne\, who holds a law degree and a Master’s in City Planning\, came to Vermont in 1988 with\nhis family to accept the position of Director of Local and Regional Planning Assistance in the VT\nDept. of Housing and Community Affairs. He subsequently founded a citizen planners journal\,\nwhich gained nationwide readership\, and was the recipient of many awards and honors in the\nplanning field. Attuned to social justice\, both he and his wife\, Lila Shapero\, continue to have an\nactive voice in neighborhood and community issues\, and beyond. It was time for a change\, and Wayne is eminently qualified to step in and continue to\nseek out speakers and presentations that reflect our Jewish and community interests.\nWayne\, who holds a law degree and a Master’s in City Planning\, came to Vermont in 1988 with\nhis family to accept the position of Director of Local and Regional Planning Assistance in the VT\nDept. of Housing and Community Affairs. He subsequently founded a citizen planners journal\,\nwhich gained nationwide readership\, and was the recipient of many awards and honors in the\nplanning field. Attuned to social justice\, both he and his wife\, Lila Shapero\, continue to have an\nactive voice in neighborhood and community issues\, and beyond. Wayne himself was a Lunch &\nLearn presenter in 2008 (“Across America on Route 50: Conversations with Citizens and \nPlanners on the State of Our Cities & Towns”) and again in 2019 (“How the 1903 Kishinev\nPogrom Shocked the World”). Look for an exciting L&L series in 2022/23\, with innovative ideas\, including panel discussions.
