SUMMARY:OZ Book Club - Jewish Noir II by Kenneth Wishnia
DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nJewish Noir II by Kenneth Wishnia \nJewish Noir II is unique collection of twenty-three all-new stories (and one reprint) by Jewish and non-Jewish literary and genre writers\, including numerous award-winning authors such as Gabriela Alemán\, Doug Allyn\, Rita Lakin\, Rabbi Ilene Schneider\, E.J. Wagner\, and Kenneth Wishnia\, with a foreword by MWA Grand Master Lawrence Block. The stories explore such issues as the perpetual challenge of confronting resurgent anti-Semitism in the US\, the enduring legacy of regional warfare in the land of Israel since biblical times\, how the “entitled” behavior of certain ultra-Orthodox communities can fuel anti-Semitic attitudes\, Jewish support of the civil rights movement\, greedy Jewish businessmen who reinforce negative ethnic stereotypes\, the excesses of “golden ghetto” American Jews\, the appeal of “tough” Israeli-Jewish soldiers and mercenaries\, how real estate fortunes are made\, and the consequences of political corruption that feed into an exploitive system\, how obsession can lead “good” people to do “bad” things. The stories in this collection include many “teachable moments” about the history of prejudice\, and the contradictions of ethnic identity and assimilation into American society.

SUMMARY:Depolarizing Ourselves – A facilitated workshop from Braver Angels
DESCRIPTION:Depolarizing Ourselves especially for our Jewish community \nA facilitated workshop from Braver Angels (braverangels.org) \nThis workshop is designed to help you lessen the effects of polarization when you encounter them in your political conversations.  By “polarization\,” we don’t mean healthy disagreements over issues or philosophy. We are talking about how we regard and talk about large groups of ordinary people on the other side of our own politics as if they were enemies. This 90 minute group session is customized for our Jewish community.  It is led by a volunteer Braver Angels Facilitator. \nOur goals are that participants will: \n\nBe more aware of their own “inner polarizer”.\nInteract without demonizing\, dismissing or stereotyping large swaths of the population.\n\n  \nPlease Register Here \n  \n\n\nAlso on this date\, please join us in the OZ Social Hall for\nAuthor Talk and Book Signing: Beyond the Politics of Contempt\nhappening from 1pm-2:30pm.

SUMMARY:Kulanu presents Navigating Israel Speaker Series – Defining Zionism: From Herzl to Mamdani
DESCRIPTION:The Kulanu Antisemitism Workgroup of Ohavi Zedek Synagogue presents:\nNavigating Israel: A Social Justice Speaker Series. \nDefining Zionism: From Herzl to Mamdani\nProfessor Adi Livny\, Ph.D.\n \nAdi Livny is a historian of knowledge institutions\, focusing on Israel and Mandatory Palestine. Her book manuscript\, Settlers\, Natives\, and Empire: The Making of the Hebrew University\, offers a revised origin story for the Hebrew University\, established in 1925 in British Mandatory Palestine\, tracing its transformation from a Jewish into an Israeli university. Drawing on materials in German\, Hebrew\, and Arabic from over ten archives in Israel and the United Kingdom\, the book examines how the Hebrew University was shaped during its formative years as a result of the dynamic interactions between its predominantly Jewish-European faculty\, the land’s Arab-Palestinian majority\, and the British Empire. \nLivny’s new project\, A Divide Apart: The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict on American Campuses\, examines how American academic spaces emerged as an external front in the Israel-Palestine conflict as early as the 1950s. Her research has been featured in peer-reviewed journals such as Studies in Contemporary Jewry and Armed Forces & Society\, as well as in public platforms like Haaretz. \nLivny earned her Ph.D. in Jewish History from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, where she was a fellow at the Mandel School for Advanced Studies in the Humanities. She currently teaches courses on Zionism\, Contemporary Israel and the Israel-Palestine Conflict. \n— Doors 5:00pm\, Program 5:30-7:00pm. \nPLEASE REGISTER

SUMMARY:Jewish Mindfulness Sit
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever meditated in a Jewish context? Come join us for mindfulness meditation\, hebrew chanting\, and community connection. You just might leave a little more refreshed\, a little less stressed\, and with more patience for the ones you love. \nThis sit is led by Zac Ispa-Landa who has studied and practiced Dharma for 20 years\, both Vipassana (insight) meditation and Tantric (Vajrayana) Buddhism. His practice is animated by a vision of individual and collective liberation and supported by a wide range of teachings and techniques. \nDATES: In Yurt –\nOct 11 from 9:30-10:15 am\nNov 1 from 9:30-10:30 am\nCome for one or for both. \nMindfulness meditation in a jewish context is an opportunity to delve beyond the conceptual mind and connect more fully to all of creation (within you and around you)\, with more joy\, richness\, and awe! No experience is required and all levels of experience are welcome. \nDuring this time we will also share about upcoming opportunities to get more involved in the growing meditation community at OZ! \nThis program is offered at no charge; donations and registration appreciated. \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn // Remembering the Past in Alsace-Lorraine
DESCRIPTION:// an illustrated presentation by Lunch & Learn Coordinator\, and former journal editor\, Wayne Senville \nReflecting on a trip to the Alsace-Lorraine region of France\, Senville will discuss: \n— the growing number of STOLPERSTEINE memorial stones installed in the city of Strasbourg and throughout Europe;\n— the Nazis’ murder of 86 Jews at the Natzweiler-Struthof Concentration Camp (built on the site of a popular Alsatian ski resort) to create a collection of Jewish skulls and skeletons; and\n— why renowned artist Marc Chagall’s dramatic “Peace Window” in the town of Sarrebourg includes scenes of Jesus’s life and Crucifixion. \nAbout Our Speaker: \nWayne Senville is the volunteer coordinator of the OZ Lunch & Learn series\, and a past member of the OZ Board of Directors. Senville\, who is now retired\, was publisher and editor of the national Planning Commissioners Journal for 24 years. He also served for 11 years as a member of the Burlington Planning Commission; received the citizen planner of the year award from the Northern New England Chapter of the American Planning Association; and was honored with the City of Burlington’s Herb Bloomenthal Award for Community Activism. \nSenville has previously given two Lunch & Learn talks at Ohavi Zedek. His first talk recounted highlights of his six weeks’ travel from Maryland to California\, during which he met with planners and planning commissioners in 20 cities and towns in 12 states (and Washington\, DC) located along U.S. Route 50. Senville’s second OZ talk focused on the impact  and significance of the 1903 Kishinev pogrom\, the first pogrom to draw extensive media coverage thanks to newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst and Irish journalist Michael Davitt. \n  \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Grief Circle: A Community of Presence and Support
DESCRIPTION:“We gather not because we have answers for one another\, but because we believe no one should have to carry grief alone.” \nThe OZ Grief Circle is a welcoming\, peer-supported gathering for adults experiencing loss\, grief\, caregiving challenges\, or major life transitions. Together\, we create space for honest conversation\, compassionate listening\, reflection\, and connection. \nEach gathering offers opportunities to share\, listen\, and draw strength from community\, along with Jewish wisdom\, readings\, and rituals that can help us navigate loss\, memory\, healing\, and hope. \nThe Grief Circle is led by trained facilitators and OZ members Michael Schaal and Harvey Klein\, together with Rabbi Ariel and Jess Strolen-Goltzman. This is not a therapy group. It is a community of presence and support grounded in compassion\, confidentiality\, and mutual care. Whether your loss is recent or something you have carried for years\, you are welcome. \nMeets on the first Tuesday of each month\, 5:30–7:00 pm\, in the Samuelson-Saiger Sanctuary.\n\nTo help foster meaningful conversation and connection\, registration is requested. \n  \nREGISTER HERE
