SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn // Reflections from Travels in Alsace-Lorraine
DESCRIPTION:// an illustrated presentation by Lunch & Learn Coordinator\, and former journal editor\, Wayne Senville \nReflecting on a trip to the Alsace-Lorraine region of France\, Senville will discuss: \n— the life of prominent 20th century French editor\, journalist\, women’s rights activist\, and “pan-European” political activist Louise Weiss;\n— the growing number of STOLPERSTEINE memorial stones installed in the city of Strasbourg and throughout Europe;\n— the Nazis’ murder of 86 Jews at the Natzweiler-Struthof Concentration Camp (built on the site of a popular Alsatian ski resort) to create a collection of Jewish skulls and skeletons; and\n— why renowned artist Marc Chagall’s dramatic “Peace Window” in the town of Sarrebourg includes scenes of Jesus’s life and Crucifixion. \nAbout Our Speaker: \nWayne Senville served as a planner in the National Park Service’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Office\, and\, after moving to Vermont\, worked as planning program manager for Vermont’s Department of Housing & Community Affairs. Senville then (from 1988 through 2014) served as publisher and editor of the Planning Commissioners Journal . He also served for 11 years as a member of the Burlington Planning Commission; received the citizen planner of the year award from the Northern New England Chapter of the American Planning Association; and was honored with the City of Burlington’s Herb Bloomenthal Award for Community Activism. \nWayne Senville has previously given two Lunch & Learn talks at Ohavi Zedek. His first talk recounted highlights of his six weeks’ travel from Maryland to California\, during which he met with planners and planning commissioners in 20 cities and towns in 12 states (and Washington\, DC) located along U.S. Route 50. Senville’s second OZ talk focused on the impact  and significance of the 1903 Kishinev pogrom\, the first pogrom to draw extensive media coverage thanks to publisher William Randolph Hearst and Irish journalist Michael Davitt. \n  \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Grief Circle: A Community of Presence and Support
DESCRIPTION:“We gather not because we have answers for one another\, but because we believe no one should have to carry grief alone.” \nThe OZ Grief Circle is a welcoming\, peer-supported gathering for adults experiencing loss\, grief\, caregiving challenges\, or major life transitions. Together\, we create space for honest conversation\, compassionate listening\, reflection\, and connection. \nEach gathering offers opportunities to share\, listen\, and draw strength from community\, along with Jewish wisdom\, readings\, and rituals that can help us navigate loss\, memory\, healing\, and hope. \nThe Grief Circle is led by trained facilitators and OZ members Michael Schaal and Harvey Klein\, together with Rabbi Ariel.\nThis is not a therapy group. It is a community of presence and support grounded in compassion\, confidentiality\, and mutual care. Whether your loss is recent or something you have carried for years\, you are welcome. \nMeets on the first Tuesday of each month\, 5:30–7:00 pm\, in the Samuelson-Saiger Sanctuary.\n\nTo help foster meaningful conversation and connection\, registration is requested. \n  \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn // Public Libraries are Being Tested: The First Amendment & Intellectual Freedom
DESCRIPTION:// A talk by Mary Danko\, Director of the Fletcher Free Library \nWhat does intellectual freedom really mean and what happens when it is challenged? This timely and engaging program explores the essential role public libraries play in protecting the freedom to read\, access information\, and support diverse ideas. We’ll consider book challenges and other real-world situations libraries face involving displays\, programs\, meeting rooms\, privacy\, and First Amendment rights. \nFletcher Free Library Director Mary Danko will also explore how strong policies\, professional ethics\, and thoughtful decision-making help libraries navigate difficult and sometimes controversial situations\, while remaining welcoming institutions that serve the entire community. \nAbout Our Speaker: \nMary Danko is nearing her 10-year anniversary as Director of Burlington’s Fletcher Free Library\, having previously served as library director in Sunapee\, New Hampshire\, and in Weathersfield and Hartland\, Vermont. She holds a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from Syracuse University\, and more recently an MBA from Champlain College. \nMary grew up outside of Cleveland\, Ohio\, the granddaughter of immigrants from Czechoslovakia and Ireland. Her parents never attained a college degree\, but they fostered in Mary a love of reading and a lifelong intellectual curiosity\, as well as introduced her to regular visits to the local library. \n  \nREGISTER HERE
