I grew up in Queens\, the great melting pot. I’ve been writing since my teens. I now reside in Montpelier with my cat and lots of books. I sing in two choirs and am a musician/ songwriter. I don’t know what else to say but that I am committed to a life of love and justice \n\n \nIvy Schweitzer\nBorn in Brooklyn\, NY\, Ivy Schweitzer now lives in Vermont and has taught American Literature and Women’s Studies at Dartmouth College. She writes about cultural identity and social justice from a feminist and Jewish perspective. Her poems have appeared recently in Passager\, Ritualwell\, Tikkun\, New Croton Review\, Mississippi Review\, Spoon River Poetry Review\, The New England Poetry Club’s Prize Winners’ Anthology 2024 and The Mountain Troubadour. Her debut solo collection\, Dividing Rivers\, appeared in 2025 from Finishing Line Press. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nNonviolence: The History of a Dangerous Idea by Mark Kurlansky \nIn this timely\, highly original\, and controversial narrative\, New York Times bestselling author Mark Kurlansky discusses nonviolence as a distinct entity\, a course of action\, rather than a mere state of mind. Nonviolence can and should be a technique for overcoming social injustice and ending wars\, he asserts\, which is why it is the preferred method of those who speak truth to power. Nonviolence is a sweeping yet concise history that moves from ancient Hindu times to present-day conflicts raging in the Middle East and elsewhere. Kurlansky also brings into focus just why nonviolence is a “dangerous” idea\, and asks such provocative questions as: Is there such a thing as a “just war”? DESCRIPTION:As parents\, we spend so much of our lives nurturing and protecting our children. In Jewish tradition\, there is a parallel\, sacred duty of protection and care that takes place at the very end of life. \nThis presentation\, by OZ Board President Lynda Siegel\, offers a gentle and informative introduction to the Chevra Kadisha (Sacred Society) and the ritual of Tahara—the traditional process of washing and purifying a body for burial. Often called Chesed Shel Emet (True Kindness)\, this is considered the highest form of mitzvah because it is a favor that can never be returned. \nWe will discuss how this ancient practice honors the soul and ensures that no member of our community ever takes their final journey alone. Key topics include: \n\nThe Essence of Kavod HaMet: Understanding the core Jewish value of “honoring the deceased” with dignity and modesty.\nA Journey of Purity: A respectful overview of the prayers\, the ritual washing\, and the dressing of the body in Tachrichim (simple white linen shrouds).\nCommunity and Continuity: How this quiet\, volunteer-led tradition strengthens the bonds of our synagogue and provides comfort to grieving families.\nJoin us to learn more about the beautiful\, hidden rituals that reflect our deepest Jewish values of equality\, respect\, and eternal care.\n\nREGISTER HERE \n\nChaiLights gatherings will give you a chance to learn\, taste and connect. \nEach gathering will start off with food and open conversation\, followed by a unique experience that will engage and inspire\, let us create and improve the world. \nThis project’s vibe is fun\, social and low-pressure\, with activities lead by community volunteers.
