SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn // The Kurdish-led Local Democracy Revolution in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:// An Illustrated Talk by Author and Translator Janet Biehl\nGraduation day at the women’s academy in Raqqa\, a place where ISIS once sold women it captured as sex slaves. Janet Biehl in back row center wearing scarf. \nDuring the war against the Islamic State (from 2014)\, the U.S.-led coalition coordinated with Kurdish-led ground forces to defeat ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Almost unreported in U.S. media\, those Kurdish fighters represented a new society in northeastern Syria that\, since 2012\, had been advancing gender equality\, religious and ethnic inclusivity\, and bottom-up democracy. \nThis astonishingly progressive revolutionary project\, which continues to this day\, was inspired in great part by the writings of a Jewish Vermonter\, the late Murray Bookchin (d. 2006). His close friend and colleague Janet Biehl tells the story. \nRecommended pre- or post-talk article from the HuffPost: \n\nAmerica’s Best Allies Against ISIS Are Inspired By A Bronx-Born Libertarian Socialist — Syrian Kurds have launched an unlikely radical experiment in governance without hierarchy\, patriarchy or capitalism. \nSee also this quite interesting article from the New York Times: With Fire and Song\, Kurds in Turkey Hail the Start of Spring. March 21\, 2026. \n\nThe valiant fighters of the YPJ\, the Women’s Protection Units\, who helped defeat ISIS in Syria in 2014-2019. Janet Biehl is in the center of the back row. \n  \nPlease Register Here to Help Us Plan \n\nAbout OZ’s Lunch and Learns: \nSpeakers cover a wide range of topics. A delicious lunch will be offered\, which is served promptly at NOON. The talks begin at about 12:15pm and end no later than 1:15pm (including some time for Q&A). \nSuggested cash contribution of $10 for food can be paid on the registration form or collected at the event — but feel free to give more or less. Please also consider being a sponsor of one or more Lunch & Learn talks. Information on this is on Lunch & Learn talk registration pages\, or contact OZ Program & Engagement Manager Evan Rose at: 802-864-0218 ext 801. \n\n\n 2025-2026 Series of Lunch and Learn Talks: Thursday\, September 18\, 2025: Jewish Life & Antisemitism in Today's Germany // a talk by UVM Professor Alan Steinweis Thursday\, October 16\, 2025: Working to Advance Legal Protections for Animals // a talk by Animal Law lawyer Laura Ireland Thursday\, November 20\, 2025: From Berlin to Hollywood: the life and times of Ernst Lubitsch\, Fritz Lang\, and Billy Wilder // a talk\, with film clips\, by UVM Lane Series Director Natalie Neuert Thursday\, December 18\, 2025: An Introduction to the Me2 Orchestra // a presentation by Orchestra Manager and Cellist Phoenix Crockett Thursday\, January 15\, 2026: Supporting Kids & Families -- the Work of the Boys & Girls Club of Burlington // an illustrated talk by Executive Director Tanya Benosky Thursday\, February 19\, 2026: Volunteers Helping People Seeking Asylum // An Introduction by CASAN Board Members Jan Steinbauer and Kim Watkin Thursday\, March 26\, 2026: The Kurdish-led Local Democracy Revolution in the Middle East // an illustrated talk by author and translator Janet Biehl Thursday\, April 16\, 2026: Jewish Traditions in Classical Choral Music // an exploration by Musicologist & Choral Conductor Nathaniel G. SUMMARY:OZ Book Club - One Little Goat: A Passover Catastrophe by Dara Horn
DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nOne Little Goat: A Passover Catastrophe by Dara Horn \nA lost Afikomen\, a time-traveling talking goat\, and a never-ending seder illuminate the meaning of Passover in Dara Horn’s dryly funny graphic novel. \nA family sits at the table\, ready to start their Passover seder. There’s Grandpa\, who’s attempting to lead; anxious dad and pregnant mom; Cool Cousin and Uncool Cousin; 98-year-old great-grandma who survived the Warsaw Ghetto; our narrator\, Wise Child\, and his siblings—one of whom has lost the Afikomen. Without it\, this seder can never end. Accompanied by a wisecracking\, irreverent little goat who shows up at the front door\, Wise Child takes a journey through time and all the Passovers past to retrieve the Afikomen\, end the seder\, and understand his family\, his faith\, and his history along the way. \nComplemented by Theo Ellsworth’s fantastical artwork\, Dara Horn’s first graphic novel is a delightfully bizarre exploration of the meaning of Passover\, layered with joy\, humor\, and magic.

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn // Jewish Traditions in Classical Choral Music
DESCRIPTION:// An Exploration by Musicologist & Choral Conductor Nathaniel G. Lew\nSalomon Sulzer. Public domain\, via Wikimedia Commons \nOn May 30th and 31st\, the Vermont Choral Union will present concerts in Burlington titled Avodath Hakodesh – Four Hundred Years of Jewish Sacred Music. The repertory includes choral works by liturgical composers Salomon Sulzer and Louis Lewandowsi\, other Jewish composers such as Salmone Rossi and Leonard Bernstein\, and composers from outside the Jewish tradition. \nTaking the pieces on the VCU program as examples\, musicologist and choral conductor Nathaniel G. Lew will explore what makes music “classical\,” “Jewish\,” “sacred\,” and “liturgical.” We will listen to examples and examine issues such as the status of choral singing in Jewish tradition and the role of the Book of Psalms in Jewish and non-Jewish religious practice. The talk will stand on its own\, and will also serve as preparation for what promise to be fascinating performances. \nHaving served as a Professor of Music at Saint Michael’s College for 23 years\, Nathaniel G. Lew is currently Choral Director at the University of Vermont\, Artistic Director of Counterpoint Chorus\, and Chorus Master of the Opera Company of Middlebury. \n\n  \nPlease Register Here to Help Us Plan \n\nAbout OZ’s Lunch and Learns: \nSpeakers cover a wide range of topics. SUMMARY:YIVO Presents: The Future of Holocaust Memory: Poland and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Holocaust distortion in Poland involves reshaping or minimizing facts about the Holocaust\, often emphasizing Polish victimhood while obscuring instances of local collaboration\, participation\, or indifference. It appears in political rhetoric\, memory laws\, public commemorations\, and attacks on critical scholarship. YIVO’s Poland vs. Holocaust History series examines these dynamics and situates the Polish case within a broader European context. \nThis discussion panel will reflect on the future of Holocaust memory in Poland and in a broader international context. Bringing together Jan T. Gross\, Elżbieta Janicka\, and Jan Grabowski\, the conversation will address the evolving challenges facing Holocaust remembrance amid political polarization\, historical revisionism\, and generational change. The panelists will consider the roles of scholarship\, education\, public debate\, and cultural institutions in sustaining honest engagement with the past. The discussion will also explore how national and transnational perspectives can coexist\, and what is at stake for historical truth\, democratic values\, and moral responsibility in shaping the future of Holocaust memory. \nThis online event will take place via Zoom at 1:00pm ET. \nClick here for More Info / Registration

SUMMARY:OZ Book Club - Goyhood by Reuven Fenton
DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nGoyhood by Reuven Fenton \nFunny\, poignant\, and revelatory while plumbing the emotional depths of the relationship between estranged brothers\, Goyhood examines what happens when one becomes unmoored from a comfortable\, spiritual existence and must decide whether coincidence is in fact destiny. \nWhen Mayer (née Marty) Belkin fled small town Georgia for Brooklyn nearly thirty years ago\, he thought he’d left his wasted youth behind. Now he’s a Talmud scholar married into one of the greatest rabbinical families in the world – a dirt poor country boy reinvented in the image of God. \nBut his mother’s untimely death brings a shocking Mayer and his ne’er-do-well twin brother David aren’t\, in fact\, Jewish. Traumatized and spiritually bereft\, Mayer’s only recourse is to convert to Judaism. But the earliest date he can get is a week from now. What are two estranged brothers to do in the interim? \nSo begins the Belkins’ Rumspringa through America’s Deep South with Mom’s ashes in tow\, plus two an insightful Instagram influencer named Charlayne Valentine and Popeye\, a one-eyed dog. As the crew gets tangled up in a series of increasingly surreal adventures\, Mayer grapples with a God who betrayed him and an emotionally withdrawn wife in Brooklyn who has yet to learn her husband is a counterfeit Jew.

SUMMARY:Israeli Dancing - Drop In
DESCRIPTION:Israeli folkdance is a joyous folk art form that is easy to start and difficult to stop. It draws from many cultures and expresses itself in dances that range in complexity and speed. See this article for more information. \nJoin hosts Adele\, Lani and Mitch and a friendly friendly group of people that gathers periodically on Zoom or in person to enjoy the folkdances of Israel! \nWe mostly dance around a circle so no partner is required. We have a large repertoire of beginner-friendly dances. New dancers are encouraged to come at the beginning of the session to benefit from instruction. Please wear shoes with clean soles. \nThis program is free with an optional donation. \nRegister Here \nBecause of ongoing concerns about covid and other circulating viruses\, the group would greatly appreciate attendees wearing a high quality mask such as N95 or KN95. \n

SUMMARY:OZ Book Club - Heart of a Stranger by Angela Buchdahl
DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nHeart of a Stranger by Angela Buchdahl \nAngela Buchdahl was born in Seoul\, the daughter of a Korean Buddhist mother and Jewish American father. Profoundly spiritual from a young age\, by sixteen she felt the first stirrings to become a rabbi. Despite the naysayers and periods of self-doubt—Would a mixed-race woman ever be seen as authentically Jewish or chosen to lead a congregation?—she stayed the course\, which took her first to Yale\, then to rabbinical school\, and finally to the pulpit of one of the largest\, most influential congregations in the world.
