SUMMARY:Reflections from Israel’s Arava Institute for Environmental Studies: Working for Peace During a Year of War By Rabbi Michael M. Cohen
DESCRIPTION:This year\, Ohavi Zedek’s Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day) day of learning and hope will feature a discussion by Rabbi Michael Cohen of the Arava Environmental Institute for Environmental Studies & Friends of the Arava Institute and Bennington College. \nRabbi Cohen\, a longtime environmental activist and peace maker\, has written extensively on the impact of social and ecological issues on the conflict in the Middle East. He spends his time living in Manchester Center\, Vermont and Kibbutz Ketura\, Israel. He will share insights from being at the Institute since its doors opened in 1996 through his many long stays there including this past year of tragedy and war. Rabbi Cohen will unpackage how the Institute creates conditions for new relationships to develop between Israelis and Palestinians even during times of heightened conflict. \nThe Arava Institute\, where Rabbi Cohen is faculty\, brings together Palestinian\, Jordanian\, Israeli\, and international students at their Kibbutz Ketura campus in the south of Israel. The program educates future leaders to meet the Middle East’s environmental challenges with innovative peace-building solutions. \nOur own Rabbi Aaron and a number of OZ members have studied at Arava with Rabbi Cohen. \nProgram Schedule: \n10:30 am: Rabbi Cohen’s talk\, followed by Q&A at 11:10 am\n11:45 am: Bagel Brunch\n12:30 pm: Music and Israeli Dancing \n

Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nKünstlers in Paradise by Cathleen Schine \nThere was a time when the family Künstler lived in the fairy-tale city of Vienna. SUMMARY:Feen Lecture 2025 - Rabbi Jill Jacobs: Why is Antisemitism at the Center of Attacks on Democracy?
DESCRIPTION:The A. Pearly & Edith C. Feen Lecture Series presents Rabbi Jill Jacobs as the 2025 speaker. \nCEO of T’ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights \nAmong Forward’s Top 50 influential American Jews \nAuthor of “Where Justice Dwells: A Hands-On Guide\nto Doing Social Justice in Your Jewish Community” \n\nWhy is Antisemitism at the Center of Attacks on Democracy?\nOver the past few months\, the Trump administration has detained and attempted to deport student visa holders and even a green card holder and stripped funding from universities\, all in the name of fighting antisemitism. Most of the American Jewish community\, though\, even if alarmed and frightened by the rise of antisemitism since October 7\, believes in democratic institutions and constitutional rights -including the right to free speech and due process. Why is the administration invoking antisemitism in order to dismantle democracy? What are potential implications for the Jewish and broader community\, and how can the Jewish community respond? \n REGISTER \n\nThe A. Pearly and Edith C. Feen Lecture Series was created to honor the memory of A. Pearly Feen\, one of Vermont’s most outstanding attorneys and legal scholars\, and Edith C. Feen\, his wife.  Feen was especially known for hiring a number of new lawyers\, just starting out\, many of whom were also members of OZ. \nThe lecture series was established in 1988 by Feen’s daughter Elaine Kaufman\, described as follows: \n“The A. Pearly and Edith C. Feen lecture presents speakers who can contribute significantly to public conversations of interest to a broad community\, often but not exclusively related to law.  The lecture is open to the general public\, without charge\, and publicized within local media as well as within Ohavi Zedek Synagogue.  The Feen lecture reflects the depth of Ohavi Zedek Synagogue’s commitment to intellectual inquiry and community engagement.”

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn // Last Messages from the Dying // May 15\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:The dying process is daunting and brings forth a plethora of emotions that are felt by all. While there are signs that indicate when someone has reached the end stages of the dying process\, the most moving indicator is called “abstract speech.” Often overlooked\, abstract speech offers an opportunity for a final connection with the departing person. Join Sarah Villanueva\, who is both Director of Beth Jacob Synagogue and an End of Life Doula\, as she explores this phenomenon. \nAbout OZ’s Lunch and Learns: \nSpeakers cover a wide range of topics. SUMMARY:OZ Book Club - Kantika
DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nKantika by Elizabeth Graver \nA kaleidoscopic portrait of one family’s displacement across four countries\, Kantika―“song” in Ladino―follows the joys and losses of Rebecca Cohen\, feisty daughter of the Sephardic elite of early 20th-century Istanbul. When the Cohens lose their wealth and are forced to move to Barcelona and start anew\, Rebecca fashions a life and self from what comes her way―a failed marriage\, the need to earn a living\, but also passion\, pleasure and motherhood. Moving from Spain to Cuba to New York for an arranged second marriage\, she faces her greatest challenge―her disabled stepdaughter\, Luna\, whose feistiness equals her own and whose challenges pit new family against old.

DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nThe Plot Against America by Philip Roth \nIn an extraordinary feat of narrative invention\, Philip Roth imagines an alternate history where Franklin D. Roosevelt loses the 1940 presidential election to heroic aviator and rabid isolationist Charles A. Lindbergh. Shortly thereafter\, Lindbergh negotiates a cordial “understanding” with Adolf Hitler\, while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

SUMMARY:Vermont Jewish Poets - Summer Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Vermont Jewish Poets – Summer Gathering\nOpen to Vermont poets who self-identify as Jewish\nA day to read our poems\, to write and to deepen connection \nJuly 27\, 2025\n10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nBeth Jacob Synagogue\n10 Harrison Ave.\, Montpelier\, VT 05602 \nBeth Jacob Synagogue is wheelchair accessible\, microphones will be used \nMore information: Email Judy \n  \nPLEASE REGISTER \n\nWhat to expect:\nRound-robin reading in which each person will read one poem to the group \nSpecial reading by Featured Poet Jane Shore \n \nJane Shore’s six books of poems have garnered many prizes—including the Juniper Prize (1977)\, the Lamont Prize (1986) and the 2010 Poets Prize. She’s \nbeen a Guggenheim Fellow\, a Radcliffe Institute Fellow\, and a Hodder Fellow at Princeton. Widely anthologized\, her poems appeared in The New Yorker\, The New Republic and The Yale Review. That Said: New and Selected Poems\, was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2012. A Professor Emerita at the George Washington University\, she lives in East Calais\, VT. \nGenerative workshop by Jane Shore: Good Poets Steal \nT.S. Eliot wrote\, “Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take\, and good poets make it into something better\, or at least different.”\nIn this workshop we’ll explore a process of deep learning from poems that we love\, basing our own drafts on works we admire. I will share a poem of mine I consider almost done and the original it is based on\, with revisions I made over time until it became my own. But how much is mine\, how much remains of the original—and at what point does it cross over enough to become a real poem\, a poem that sounds like me; an echo\, not just a copy? As the mud is still wet\, I’ll invite your suggestions for further changes. I find making these hybrid/homages to be an exciting way to stretch my poetic muscle in terms of subject matter\, vision\, language and tone\, and to open up new vistas when I am stuck on what to write. I’ll provide a list of favorite “Imitations” by others. \nPlease bring a poem you love\, are intrigued by\, wish that you had written yourself. It can be a poem by another poet written in English or a translation. Bring these to work with during our session\, plus anything that also may inform the poem—the backstory\, wiki\, etc. Bring your computer or paper and pen\, whatever your normal process is. By session’s end\, you may well be on your way to have a workable draft to take home. \nI find this quote by Robert Lowell from the introduction of his book\, Imitations\, to be helpful in this process: “Boris Pasternak has said that the usual reliable translator gets the literal meaning but misses the tone\, and that in poetry tone is of course everything. I have been reckless with literal meaning\, and labored hard to get the tone. Most often this has been a tone\, for the tone is something that will always more or less escape transference to another language and cultural moment…I believe that poetic translation—I would call it an imitation—must be expert and inspired\, and needs at least as much technique\, luck and rightness of hand as the original poem.…I have been almost as free as the authors themselves in finding ways to make them ring right for me.” Though Lowell writes of translation\, we can use his approach to make our own ”imitations” ring true for us. \nBook swap\, your own or books you’d like to trade \nTime to schmooze and move around \nBYO brown bag lunch\, fruit and water supplied

SUMMARY:OZ Book Club 2025 - Never Again Will I Visit Auschwitz
DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nNever Again Will I Visit Auschwitz: A Graphic Family Memoir of Trauma & Inheritance by Ari Richter \nNever Again Will I Visit Auschwitz is an act of self-discovery and the resuscitation of historical memory. At its heart is the intersection of a genocidal political moment in 20th century history and the author’s own family history. Told from the perspectives of four generations of the author’s family\, spanning pre-war Germany to post-Trump America\, it is both a celebration of Jewish cultural resilience and a warning of democracy’s fragility in the face of the seductive forces of authoritarianism. Part travelogue\, part memoir\, part historic retelling\, author Ari Richter recreates his family’s journey leading up to and extending beyond the Holocaust.
