SUMMARY:Grief Circle: A Community of Presence and Support
DESCRIPTION:“We gather not because we have answers for one another\, but because we believe no one should have to carry grief alone.” \nThe OZ Grief Circle is a welcoming\, peer-supported gathering for adults experiencing loss\, grief\, caregiving challenges\, or major life transitions. Together\, we create space for honest conversation\, compassionate listening\, reflection\, and connection. \nEach gathering offers opportunities to share\, listen\, and draw strength from community\, along with Jewish wisdom\, readings\, and rituals that can help us navigate loss\, memory\, healing\, and hope. \nThe Grief Circle is led by trained facilitators and OZ members Michael Schaal and Harvey Klein\, together with Rabbi Ariel.\nThis is not a therapy group. It is a community of presence and support grounded in compassion\, confidentiality\, and mutual care. Whether your loss is recent or something you have carried for years\, you are welcome. \nMeets on the first Tuesday of each month\, 5:30–7:00 pm\, in the Samuelson-Saiger Sanctuary.\n\nTo help foster meaningful conversation and connection\, registration is requested. \n  \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn // Public Libraries are Being Tested: The First Amendment & Intellectual Freedom
DESCRIPTION:// A talk by Mary Danko\, Director of the Fletcher Free Library \nWhat does intellectual freedom really mean and what happens when it is challenged? This timely and engaging program explores the essential role public libraries play in protecting the freedom to read\, access information\, and support diverse ideas. We’ll consider book challenges and other real-world situations libraries face involving displays\, programs\, meeting rooms\, privacy\, and First Amendment rights. \nFletcher Free Library Director Mary Danko will also explore how strong policies\, professional ethics\, and thoughtful decision-making help libraries navigate difficult and sometimes controversial situations\, while remaining welcoming institutions that serve the entire community. \nAbout Our Speaker: \nMary Danko is nearing her 10-year anniversary as Director of Burlington’s Fletcher Free Library\, having previously served as library director in Sunapee\, New Hampshire\, and in Weathersfield and Hartland\, Vermont. She holds a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from Syracuse University\, and more recently an MBA from Champlain College. \nMary grew up outside of Cleveland\, Ohio\, the granddaughter of immigrants from Czechoslovakia and Ireland. Her parents never attained a college degree\, but they fostered in Mary a love of reading and a lifelong intellectual curiosity\, as well as introduced her to regular visits to the local library. \n  \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn // The Dead Sea Scrolls Discovery and its Resonance in American Popular Culture
DESCRIPTION:// a talk by Shalom Goldman\, Professor Emeritus of Religion\, Middlebury College \nPhilip K Dick in early 1960s. Arthur Knight (photographer)\, Public domain\, via Wikimedia Commons \nThe discovery of Dead Sea Scrolls in the Judean Desert between 1947 and 1952\, was one of the great archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century. Found in the cache were fragments of 23 of the 24 books of the Hebrew Bible. Also found was a vast Jewish sectarian literature dated to the final centuries of the pre-Christian era. \nEdmund Wilson\, circa. 1936. Public domain\, via Wikimedia Commons \nOnce the scrolls and fragments were collated\, deciphered\, and translated\, the scholarly and public interest in them grew — especially in the United States. Goldman’s lecture will survey that scholarly interest and then describe two (very different!) American literary figures who wrote about the Scrolls: literary critic Edmund Wilson and popular culture visionary Philip K Dick. \nAbout Our Speaker \nShalom Goldman is the Pardon Tillinghast Professor Emeritus of Religion at Middlebury College. A scholar of comparative religion\, his work focuses on Judaism\, Christianity\, Islam\, and the religious and cultural relationships among the three traditions. \nGoldman’s most recent book is From Jews to Muslims: Twentieth-Century Converts to Islam (2024). His other books include God’s Sacred Tongue: Hebrew and the American Imagination (2004)\, Zeal for Zion: Christians\, Jews\, and the Idea of the Promised Land (2010)\, and Starstruck in the Promised Land: How the Arts Shaped American Passions about Israel (2019). \nBefore coming to Middlebury College\, Goldman taught religion and Middle Eastern studies at Duke University\, and Hebrew and Middle Eastern studies at Emory University. \nGoldman and his spouse\, Laurie Patton\, former president of Middlebury College\, are members of the OZ community. We’re also hoping to welcome Laurie as a Lunch & Learn speaker next year! \nREGISTER HERE \n  \n\n— for photo of Dead Sea Scrolls: Portion of the Temple Scroll\, labeled 11Q19\, one of the longest of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
