DESCRIPTION:Zoom only / Thursday\, December 12\, 2024 \nWhen I Grow Up: The Lost Autobiographies of Six Yiddish Teenagers by Ken Krimstein\nWhen I Grow Up is New Yorker cartoonist Ken Krimstein’s new graphic nonfiction book\, based on six of hundreds of newly discovered\, never-before-published autobiographies of Eastern European Jewish teens on the brink of WWII―found in 2017 hidden in a Lithuanian church cellar. These autobiographies\, long thought destroyed by the Nazis\, were written as entries for three competitions held in Eastern Europe in the 1930s\, just before the horror of the Holocaust forever altered the lives of the young people who wrote them. \nIn When I Grow Up\, Krimstein shows us the stories of these six young men and women in riveting\, almost cinematic narratives\, full of humor\, yearning\, ambition\, and all the angst of the teenage years. It’s as if half a dozen new Anne Frank stories have suddenly come to light\, framed by the dramatic story of the documents’ rediscovery.

DESCRIPTION:Tight up against the Chinese border in northern Vietnam is a mountainous\, tribal area from which\, almost daily\, Hmong girls are tricked\, drugged\, kidnapped and smuggled deep inside China. There\, they’re sold into coercive marriages and domestic\, agricultural or sexual slavery. Disoriented\, most lack the language\, means and skills to escape. See this article for more information. \nJoin hosts Adele\, Lani and Mitch and a friendly friendly group of people that gathers periodically on Zoom or in person to enjoy the folkdances of Israel! \nWe mostly dance around a circle so no partner is required. We have a large repertoire of beginner-friendly dances. New dancers are encouraged to come at the beginning of the session to benefit from instruction. DESCRIPTION:Every night our souls go on a journey through the spirit world. We learn from the Talmud that dreams are 1/60th of prophecy and that a dream that has not been interpreted is like a letter that has not been read. Together we will discover the wealth of Jewish teachings on dreams\, dream interpretation\, and dream rituals.  \nAs part of the class each person will keep a personal dream journal (Sefer Chalomot). We are meeting in the month of Kislev\, which according to kabbalah is a time to turn within and pay attention to the deeper messages of our dreams. Kislev is also when we read from the Torah about Jacob’s Ladder and Josef the dreamer and dream interpreter. \nNo prior knowledge of Judaism is required nor do you need to be Jewish. DESCRIPTION:Since Oct. 7\, 2023\, antisemitism has seen a concerning rise in many parts of the world\, often manifesting through heightened hostility towards Israel. \nIt should be noted that criticism of the Israeli government is not necessarily antisemitic\, but a question of: “When does a specific action or sentiment become antisemitic.” \nThis increase in negative opinions is frequently expressed through the spread of harmful stereotypes about Jewish people\, and through the delegitimization of Israel’s right to exist. Some individuals and groups have used criticism of Israeli government policies as a cover for broader attacks on Jews\, falsely equating all Jews with the actions of the Israeli state. \nAdditionally\, there has been a notable surge in antisemitic rhetoric at political rallies\, on social media platforms\, and within academic and cultural spaces. This trend not only exacerbates tensions at home but also contributes to the rise of hate and division globally\, ultimately fueling a dangerous climate of prejudice that impacts both Israelis and Jews worldwide. \nJoin us at this program to hear the thoughts of an esteemed panel discussion (Rabbi David Edleson\, Alan Steinweis\, Dr. Felicia Kornbluh\, and David Geddes)\, followed by a Q&A discussion in the OZ Sanctuary.   \nBagels and coffee at 9am in the social hall. \nPlease Register Here \n\nBios \nAlan Steinweis is Professor of History and Raul Hilberg Distinguished Professor of Holocaust Studies at UVM\, where he has taught since 2009. He is the author of four books about Nazi Germany and the editor of ten additional volumes. He has served as a guest professor at several German universities and at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev\, and has held the Levine Senior Invitational Fellowship at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. \nDavid Geddes is currently president of Temple Sinai and board member of Shalom Alliance.vHe started as an academic anthropologist/archeologist\, then veered off course into a career in corporate communications and consulting for 30 years. He earned a B.A. magna cum laude in Social Studies from Harvard\, an M.B.A. from the University of Kansas\, a masters from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris)\, and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. David and his wife live in the south end of Burlington and on a lake in Minnesota for the summer. They have four children and ten grandchildren. \nDr. Felicia Kornbluh is Professor of History and Director of Jewish Studies at the University of Vermont. They are the author of 3 books and scores of scholarly and journalistic articles. \nRabbi David Edelson D.Div. has been the spiritual leader of Temple Sinai in South Burlington since 2018. He was the spiritual leader of Bethlehem Hebrew Congregation in New Hampshire from 2016-2018. Prior to that time\, he was the rabbi for Hebrew Association for the Deaf in New York for 25 years.
