SUMMARY:OZ Book Club - My Mother's Secret
DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nMy Mother’s Secret by Alina Adams \nAs her revolutionary neighbor mysteriously disappears during Josef Stalin’s Great Terror purges\, 18-year-old Regina suspects that she’s the Kremlin’s next target. Under cover of the night\, she flees from her parents’ communal apartment in 1930s Moscow to the 20th century’s first Jewish state\, Birobidzhan\, on the border between Russia and China. Once there\, Regina has to grapple with where preconceived notions of socialism and Judaism while asking herself the eternal question: What do we owe each other? How can we best help one another? While she contends with these queries and struggles to help Birobidzhan establish itself\, love and war are on the horizon.

A delicious lunch will be offered\, which is served promptly at NOON. The talks begin at about 12:15pm and end no later than 1:15pm (including some time for Q&A). \nSuggested cash contribution of $10 for food can be paid on the registration form or collected at the event — but feel free to give more or less. Please also consider being a sponsor of one or more Lunch & Learn talks. DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nJerusalem Drawn and Quartered: One Woman’s Year in the Heart of the Christian\, Muslim\, Armenian\, and Jewish Quarters of Old Jerusalem by Sarah Tuttle-Singer \nSarah has thrown herself into the maelstrom of living in each quarter—where time is measured in Sabbath sunsets and morning bells and calls to prayer\, in stabbing attacks and check points—keeping the holidays in each quarter\, buying bread from the same bread seller\, making friends with people who were once her enemies\, and learning some of the secrets and sharing the stories that make Jerusalem so special\, and so exquisitely ordinary.

SUMMARY:Screening of the 2024 documentary film "The Other" and Guided Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Film Screening\, Discussion and Potluck Dinner\nSponsored by OZ Adult Ed with Friends of Standing Together \nAbout the Film:\nThis is an award-winning documentary exploring the complex relationship of shared humanity\, culture and connection between Israelis & Palestinians—and the transformative journey that follows when they are faced with meeting ‘the other’ amidst the difficulty of the conflict & occupation—providing an extraordinary example of what we are all capable of as humans. \nFilmed from 2017-2024\, including post October 7th and during the subsequent war\, The Other focuses on Israeli & Palestinian peace-builders\, anti-occupation activists\, artists\, academics\, ex-fighters\, bereaved parents and many more living the reality on the ground. Whether in non-violent co-resistance\, peace-building\, or shared community\, we witness those who have only known each other through hate\, bloodshed\, inequality\, and war\, transcend beyond narrative & belief systems. They teach us that unlearning deep-seated conditioning is possible and that we can liberate ourselves from generational trauma\, hatred and fear—no matter how ingrained and legitimate those fears are. \nAbout the Discussion:\nWe will have a short introduction including guidelines for a moderated and safe discussion. Not everyone will agree with each other and that is fine. Come ready to discover something new. \nAbout the Potluck:\nVegetarian food only\, please bring serving utensils

SUMMARY:OZ Book Club - To the End of the Land
DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nTo the End of the Land by David Grossman \nJust before his release from service in the Israeli army\, Ora’s son Ofer is sent back to the front for a major offensive. In a fit of preemptive grief and magical thinking\, so that no bad news can reach her\, Ora sets out on an epic hike in the Galilee. She is joined by an unlikely companion—Avram\, a former friend and lover with a troubled past—and as they sleep out in the hills\, Ora begins to conjure her son. Ofer’s story\, as told by Ora\, becomes a surprising balm both for her and for Avram.

Roughly half of its musicians live with a mental-health diagnosis. \nMe2/ operates several ensembles where all participants play as equals in a supportive\, transparent community dedicated to wellness through music. \n  \nPlease Register Here to Help Us Plan \n\nAbout OZ’s Lunch and Learns: \nSpeakers cover a wide range of topics.
