SUMMARY:OZ Book Club - The Plot Against America
DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nThe Plot Against America by Philip Roth \nIn an extraordinary feat of narrative invention\, Philip Roth imagines an alternate history where Franklin D. Roosevelt loses the 1940 presidential election to heroic aviator and rabid isolationist Charles A. Lindbergh. Shortly thereafter\, Lindbergh negotiates a cordial “understanding” with Adolf Hitler\, while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

SUMMARY:Vermont Jewish Poets - Summer Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Vermont Jewish Poets – Summer Gathering\nOpen to Vermont poets who self-identify as Jewish\nA day to read our poems\, to write and to deepen connection \nJuly 27\, 2025\n10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nBeth Jacob Synagogue\n10 Harrison Ave.\, Montpelier\, VT 05602 \nBeth Jacob Synagogue is wheelchair accessible\, microphones will be used \nMore information: Email Judy \n  \nPLEASE REGISTER \n\nWhat to expect:\nRound-robin reading in which each person will read one poem to the group \nSpecial reading by Featured Poet Jane Shore \n \nJane Shore’s six books of poems have garnered many prizes—including the Juniper Prize (1977)\, the Lamont Prize (1986) and the 2010 Poets Prize. She’s \nbeen a Guggenheim Fellow\, a Radcliffe Institute Fellow\, and a Hodder Fellow at Princeton. Widely anthologized\, her poems appeared in The New Yorker\, The New Republic and The Yale Review. That Said: New and Selected Poems\, was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2012. A Professor Emerita at the George Washington University\, she lives in East Calais\, VT. \nGenerative workshop by Jane Shore: Good Poets Steal \nT.S. Eliot wrote\, “Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take\, and good poets make it into something better\, or at least different.”\nIn this workshop we’ll explore a process of deep learning from poems that we love\, basing our own drafts on works we admire. I will share a poem of mine I consider almost done and the original it is based on\, with revisions I made over time until it became my own. But how much is mine\, how much remains of the original—and at what point does it cross over enough to become a real poem\, a poem that sounds like me; an echo\, not just a copy? As the mud is still wet\, I’ll invite your suggestions for further changes. I find making these hybrid/homages to be an exciting way to stretch my poetic muscle in terms of subject matter\, vision\, language and tone\, and to open up new vistas when I am stuck on what to write. I’ll provide a list of favorite “Imitations” by others. \nPlease bring a poem you love\, are intrigued by\, wish that you had written yourself. It can be a poem by another poet written in English or a translation. Bring these to work with during our session\, plus anything that also may inform the poem—the backstory\, wiki\, etc. Bring your computer or paper and pen\, whatever your normal process is. By session’s end\, you may well be on your way to have a workable draft to take home. \nI find this quote by Robert Lowell from the introduction of his book\, Imitations\, to be helpful in this process: “Boris Pasternak has said that the usual reliable translator gets the literal meaning but misses the tone\, and that in poetry tone is of course everything. I have been reckless with literal meaning\, and labored hard to get the tone. Most often this has been a tone\, for the tone is something that will always more or less escape transference to another language and cultural moment…I believe that poetic translation—I would call it an imitation—must be expert and inspired\, and needs at least as much technique\, luck and rightness of hand as the original poem.…I have been almost as free as the authors themselves in finding ways to make them ring right for me.” Though Lowell writes of translation\, we can use his approach to make our own ”imitations” ring true for us. \nBook swap\, your own or books you’d like to trade \nTime to schmooze and move around \nBYO brown bag lunch\, fruit and water supplied

SUMMARY:OZ Book Club 2025 - Never Again Will I Visit Auschwitz
DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nNever Again Will I Visit Auschwitz: A Graphic Family Memoir of Trauma & Inheritance by Ari Richter \nNever Again Will I Visit Auschwitz is an act of self-discovery and the resuscitation of historical memory. At its heart is the intersection of a genocidal political moment in 20th century history and the author’s own family history. Told from the perspectives of four generations of the author’s family\, spanning pre-war Germany to post-Trump America\, it is both a celebration of Jewish cultural resilience and a warning of democracy’s fragility in the face of the seductive forces of authoritarianism. Part travelogue\, part memoir\, part historic retelling\, author Ari Richter recreates his family’s journey leading up to and extending beyond the Holocaust.

But for obvious historical reasons there is great interest in Jewish life\, as well as antisemitism\, in contemporary Germany. \nAlan Steinweis\, Professor of History and Raul Hilberg Distinguished Professor of Holocaust Studies at the University of Vermont\, will share his insights into that subject based on his extensive experience living in Germany and teaching Jewish history and the history of the Holocaust at several German universities. \n  \nPlease Register Here to Help Us Plan \nNote on Another Talk that Might Interest You: \nHitler‘s Rise to Power from the Perspective of 2025 \nThe University of Vermont Miller Center for Holocaust Studies is sponsoring a talk by Professor Benjamin Hett of Hunter College who will speak on “Hitler’s Rise to Power from the Perspective of 2025.” The talk will be given on Tuesday\, September 30th at 7:00 pm in Memorial Lounge of the Waterman Building. A delicious lunch will be offered\, which is served promptly at NOON. The talks begin at about 12:15pm and end no later than 1:15pm (including some time for Q&A). \nSuggested cash contribution of $10 for food can be paid on the registration form or collected at the event — but feel free to give more or less. SUMMARY:Screening of the 2024 documentary film "The Other" and Guided Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Film Screening\, Discussion and Potluck Dinner\nSponsored by OZ Adult Ed with Friends of Standing Together \nAbout the Film:\nThis is an award-winning documentary exploring the complex relationship of shared humanity\, culture and connection between Israelis & Palestinians—and the transformative journey that follows when they are faced with meeting ‘the other’ amidst the difficulty of the conflict & occupation—providing an extraordinary example of what we are all capable of as humans. \nFilmed from 2017-2024\, including post October 7th and during the subsequent war\, The Other focuses on Israeli & Palestinian peace-builders\, anti-occupation activists\, artists\, academics\, ex-fighters\, bereaved parents and many more living the reality on the ground. Whether in non-violent co-resistance\, peace-building\, or shared community\, we witness those who have only known each other through hate\, bloodshed\, inequality\, and war\, transcend beyond narrative & belief systems. They teach us that unlearning deep-seated conditioning is possible and that we can liberate ourselves from generational trauma\, hatred and fear—no matter how ingrained and legitimate those fears are. \nAbout the Discussion:\nWe will have a short introduction including guidelines for a moderated and safe discussion. Not everyone will agree with each other and that is fine. Come ready to discover something new. \nAbout the Potluck:\nVegetarian food only\, please bring serving utensils

Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nTo the End of the Land by David Grossman \nJust before his release from service in the Israeli army\, Ora’s son Ofer is sent back to the front for a major offensive. In a fit of preemptive grief and magical thinking\, so that no bad news can reach her\, Ora sets out on an epic hike in the Galilee. She is joined by an unlikely companion—Avram\, a former friend and lover with a troubled past—and as they sleep out in the hills\, Ora begins to conjure her son. Ofer’s story\, as told by Ora\, becomes a surprising balm both for her and for Avram.
