SUMMARY:YIVO Presents: Holocaust Distortion in Poland\, A Comparative European Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Holocaust distortion in Poland involves reshaping or minimizing facts about the Holocaust\, often emphasizing Polish victimhood while obscuring instances of local collaboration\, participation\, or indifference. It appears in political rhetoric\, memory laws\, public commemorations\, and attacks on critical scholarship. YIVO’s Poland vs. Holocaust History series examines these dynamics and situates the Polish case within a broader European context. \nThis lecture by Jan Grabowski will examine the phenomenon of Holocaust distortion in Poland within a broader comparative European framework. It explores how historical narratives about the Holocaust are reshaped\, minimized\, or selectively reinterpreted in public discourse\, politics\, education\, and law. Particular attention will be paid to the interaction between state-sponsored memory policies\, nationalist narratives\, and scholarly research\, as well as to the pressures faced by historians and educators. By comparing developments in Poland with those in other European countries—including Hungary\, Lithuania\, Germany\, and Russia—the lecture highlights both shared patterns and national specificities in confronting difficult pasts. The discussion addresses legal instruments\, public controversies\, commemorative practices\, and the role of civil society in shaping Holocaust memory. Ultimately\, the lecture asks how and why Holocaust distortion emerges\, what distinguishes distortion from legitimate historical debate\, and what the consequences are for democratic culture\, academic freedom\, and Europe’s collective understanding of the Holocaust. \nThis online event will take place via Zoom at 1:00pm ET. \nClick here for More Info / Registration

SUMMARY:Interfaith Family Conversations
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of an ongoing series of periodic gatherings of people in interfaith families or relationships*. The goal is to create space for couples or individuals from interfaith families to connect\, learn and support each other. This event is for Jewish and/or ‘adjacent’ individuals of any religious background. \nWe will meet Thursday\, March 26\, at 5:30 to 7:00 pm for a guided small group ‘check-in\,’ followed by a facilitated discussion about the interfaith family experience. Given the timing around Easter and Passover\, one conversation starter will be on navigating the holidays for interfaith families. \nThis program will be facilitated by Rachel Jolly. \nWe will work to provide childcare for those who register at least one week in advance. \nClick Here to Register \n*By interfaith families\, we are referring to folks who are part of families or relationships in which one party is Jewish and another is not. This includes those in multi-heritage families. Those who are Jews by choice are welcome as well. We learn from a diverse set of participants!

SUMMARY:Israeli Dancing - Drop In
DESCRIPTION:Israeli folkdance is a joyous folk art form that is easy to start and difficult to stop. It draws from many cultures and expresses itself in dances that range in complexity and speed. See this article for more information. \nJoin hosts Adele\, Lani and Mitch and a friendly friendly group of people that gathers periodically on Zoom or in person to enjoy the folkdances of Israel! \nWe mostly dance around a circle so no partner is required. We have a large repertoire of beginner-friendly dances. New dancers are encouraged to come at the beginning of the session to benefit from instruction. Please wear shoes with clean soles. \nThis program is free with an optional donation. \nRegister Here \nBecause of ongoing concerns about covid and other circulating viruses\, the group would greatly appreciate attendees wearing a high quality mask such as N95 or KN95. \n

SUMMARY:Community Passover Seder: Flavors of the Diaspora
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Your Seat \n\nThe Passover Seder is one of those nights that so many of us carry in our hearts — the familiar melodies that rise around the table each year\, the recipes that taste better than ever this one time a year\, the feeling of a table stretched just a little longer to make room for one more. \nOn the second night of Passover\, we’ll gather for our OZ Community Seder\, led by Rabbi Ariel and Cantor Silverberg. It will be an evening of conversation\, music\, storytelling\, and some much needed joy. Together\, we’ll retell the Exodus story — both because it’s tradition\, and because the themes still matter: resilience\, hope\, and the stubborn\, beautiful human longing for freedom. \nAnd of course\, we’ll gather around a truly special meal. Dinner will be prepared by Chef Richard Witting of Firefly Catering & Isole Events\, with two menu options exploring traditional Passover foods from across the diaspora\, and desserts by his partner\, Anna Mays of Old World Baking. \nMore than anything\, this night is about being together — around the table\, in conversation\, in song\, in the comfort that happens within community. Whether this is your first Seder or your hundredth\, you are welcome. Bring a friend. Bring your whole self. Bring your appetite. \nPlease take a look at the menu and register by Friday March 27th. For three years\, he served as Kitchen Manager at Ohavi Zedek Synagogue and has extensive experience cooking in Vermont’s synagogue community. He has also developed Jewish food programming that pairs meals with public-facing education—most notably Chanukah and the History of the Latke (December 2020) and Tu B’Shevat: The New Year of the Trees (January 2021). Alongside his culinary work\, he researches and writes on Vermont history and foodways\, designing menus and educational meals that translate archival and cultural history into thoughtful\, memorable dining experiences.

SUMMARY:YIVO Presents: The Future of Holocaust Memory: Poland and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Holocaust distortion in Poland involves reshaping or minimizing facts about the Holocaust\, often emphasizing Polish victimhood while obscuring instances of local collaboration\, participation\, or indifference. It appears in political rhetoric\, memory laws\, public commemorations\, and attacks on critical scholarship. YIVO’s Poland vs. Holocaust History series examines these dynamics and situates the Polish case within a broader European context. \nThis discussion panel will reflect on the future of Holocaust memory in Poland and in a broader international context. Bringing together Jan T. Gross\, Elżbieta Janicka\, and Jan Grabowski\, the conversation will address the evolving challenges facing Holocaust remembrance amid political polarization\, historical revisionism\, and generational change. The panelists will consider the roles of scholarship\, education\, public debate\, and cultural institutions in sustaining honest engagement with the past. The discussion will also explore how national and transnational perspectives can coexist\, and what is at stake for historical truth\, democratic values\, and moral responsibility in shaping the future of Holocaust memory. \nThis online event will take place via Zoom at 1:00pm ET. \nClick here for More Info / Registration

DESCRIPTION:Let’s preserve! Bring an empty glass jar to this session\, and leave with it packed full of cabbage already on its way to becoming delicious sauerkraut. While our hands are busy chopping and squeezing and salting\, we’ll learn some tasty history about Jewish food preservation. \nREGISTER HERE \n\nChaiLights gatherings will give you a chance to learn\, taste and connect. \nEach gathering will start off with food and open conversation\, followed by a unique experience that will engage and inspire\, let us create and improve the world. \nThis project’s vibe is fun\, social and low-pressure\, with activities lead by community volunteers. It’s a great fit for Jews\, Jewish-adjacent and those who are just curious. \nBagels and coffee served at 9:15 am \n\n  \n\n Date / Time ChaiLights Experience Community Member Hosts Sunday January 25 9:15 am - 12:00 pm Participate in Bread for Peace bread baking Scott Silverstein Sunday February 1 9:15 am - 11:00 am Tu b'Shevat / Pruning Your Fruit Trees Jacob Holzberg-Pill Sunday February 8 9:15 am - 11:00 am Opening Courageous Conversations on Israel/Palestine Nancy Sugarman Marjorie Corbman Sunday February 15 9:15 am - 10:30 am 'Ask the Rabbi' conversation Rabbi Ariel Sunday March 22 9:15 am - 10:30 am End of Life Traditions Discussion Lynda Siegel Sunday March 29 9:15 am - 10:30 am How to Talk to Your Children and Grandchildren About Antisemitism Resource Therapists / Educators Sunday April 12 9:15 am - 10:30 am Opening Courageous Conversations on Israel/Palestine Nancy Sugarman Marjorie Corbman Sunday May 3 9:15 am - 10:30 am Making Pickles with a little Jewish Food History on the Side Alexa Weitzman Sunday May 10 9:15 am - 11:00 am Opening Courageous Conversations on Israel/Palestine Nancy Sugarman\n Marjorie Corbman
