DESCRIPTION:A fundraiser for humanitarian aid in Israel and Palestine. A partnership between communities\, volunteers bake and sell bread in the community kitchens to benefit these medical relief organizations: \nUnited Hatzalah: first responders in Israel\nPalestine Children’s Relief Fund: medical care for children in Gaza and West Bank \nOur goal is to partner with a diverse groups of interfaith congregations on this project. This date will include Ohavi Zedek and Burlington Friends Meeting\, as well as other invited local congregations. If your house of worship church\, synagogue or mosque is interested in participating\, please contact us. \nBread (challah\, pita\, gluten-free oat) will be baked in the OZ kitchen on March 23rd from 12pm – 6pm and available for pick-up in the evening or the following day in Burlington or Richmond. Critics have praised his playing for its “subtlety and attention to nuance” (Philadelphia Inquirer)\, “rare pathos” (New York Times)\, “brilliant technique\, sense of humor and fantasy” (Bridgeport Post)\, “warmth and beauty of sound” (Barre-Montpelier Times Argus)\, and “power and grace” (Vermont Times). \n\nClick Here for Tickets \n\nAn artist with a large\, varied repertoire\, Orgel has specialized in Czech music\, performing programs of the complete piano music of Janáček\, and music from Terezin\, and as a scholar of classical performance practice\, he has given recitals of Beethoven and Haydn on the Viennese fortepiano. He can be heard on recordings on CRI\, (the Grammy nominated “Music of Louis Moyse”\, with flutist Karen Kevra)\, Capstone\, (Fantasias by Curt Cacioppo)\, Phoenix USA (“Music from the Holocaust”: Berman\, Haas\, Klein\, and Ullmann) and MSR (Suk\, Chausson\, and Reger). A recent project (“Alchemy of Genius”) paired Bach Preludes and Fugues with Chopin Nocturnes in recordings available online at Vermont Public Radio. His complete Chopin Nocturnes are found on his YouTube channel along with over 100 other recordings. \n \nPaul Orgel was educated at the Oberlin and New England Conservatories\, and Boston University. He holds a doctorate in piano performance from Temple University. Among his piano teachers were Russell Sherman\, Irwin and Lillian Freundlich\, Anthony DiBonaventura\, and Harvey Wedeen. He was former on the piano faculties at the Interlochen Arts Academy\, Wesleyan University\, Swarthmore and Haverford Colleges\, and is currently a member of the keyboard faculty at the University of Vermont\, and has been a piano faculty member of the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival. She is the author of Sacred Bonds of Solidarity: The Rise of Jewish Internationalism in Nineteenth-Century France (2006). Her more recent book is The Archive Thief: The Man Who Salvaged French Jewish History in the Wake of the Holocaust (Oxford University Press\, 2015). \nIn The Archive Thief\, Leff tells the gripping story of the Jewish historian Zosa Szajkowski. Born into poverty in Russian Poland in 1911\, Szajkowski was a self-made man who made a life for himself as a journalist in 1930s Paris\, and then\, after a harrowing escape to New York in 1941\, as a scholar. Although he never taught at a university or even earned a PhD\, Szajkowski became one of the world’s foremost experts on the history of the Jews in modern France\, publishing in Yiddish\, English\, and Hebrew. His work opened up new ways of thinking about Jewish emancipation\, economic and social modernization\, and the rise of modern anti-Semitism. \nYet as Leff recounts\, Szajkowski stole tens of thousands of archival documents related to French Jewish history from public archives and collections in France and moved them\, illicitly\, to New York. Why did this respectable historian become a thief? And why did librarians in the United States and Israel accept these materials from him\, turning a blind eye to the signs of ownership they bore? \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:The Transformation of a Rabbi\, A Synagogue\, and Vermont's Religious Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Two local historians and archivists from Ohavi Zedek Synagogue in Burlington\, Jeff Potash\, Ph.D.\, and Aaron Goldberg\, J.D.\, will speak about the impact and legacy of Rabbi Max B. Wall (1915-2009). They will focus on his time as a U.S. Army chaplain in Europe during World War II and his work to construct the current Ohavi Zedek synagogue and community center in Burlington. Rabbi Wall was closely connected to Saint Michael’s College as a professor. An endowment in his honor has sponsored this annual lecture since 1986. This year\, for the first time\, the lecture will focus on Rabbi Wall himself. \nThe talk\, which is free and open to the public\, will take place at Saint Michael’s College’s McCarthy Arts Center Recital Hall.

DESCRIPTION:A fundraiser for humanitarian aid in Israel and Palestine. A partnership between communities\, volunteers bake and sell bread in the community kitchens to benefit these medical relief organizations: \nUnited Hatzalah: first responders in Israel\nPalestine Children’s Relief Fund: medical care for children in Gaza and West Bank \nOur goal is to partner with a diverse groups of interfaith congregations on this project. This date will include Ohavi Zedek and Burlington Friends Meeting\, as well as other invited local congregations. If your house of worship church\, synagogue or mosque is interested in participating\, please contact us. \nBread (challah\, pita\, gluten-free oat) will be baked in the OZ kitchen on April 27th from 12pm – 6pm and available for pick-up in the evening or the following day in Burlington or Richmond. DESCRIPTION:Israeli folkdance is a joyous folk art form that is easy to start and difficult to stop. It draws from many cultures and expresses itself in dances that range in complexity and speed. See this article for more information. \nJoin hosts Adele\, Lani and Mitch and a friendly friendly group of people that gathers periodically on Zoom or in person to enjoy the folkdances of Israel! \nWe mostly dance around a circle so no partner is required. We have a large repertoire of beginner-friendly dances. New dancers are encouraged to come at the beginning of the session to benefit from instruction.
