SUMMARY:ChaiLights - End of Life Traditions Discussion
DESCRIPTION:As parents\, we spend so much of our lives nurturing and protecting our children. In Jewish tradition\, there is a parallel\, sacred duty of protection and care that takes place at the very end of life. \nThis presentation\, by OZ Board President Lynda Siegel\, offers a gentle and informative introduction to the Chevra Kadisha (Sacred Society) and the ritual of Tahara—the traditional process of washing and purifying a body for burial. Often called Chesed Shel Emet (True Kindness)\, this is considered the highest form of mitzvah because it is a favor that can never be returned. \nWe will discuss how this ancient practice honors the soul and ensures that no member of our community ever takes their final journey alone. Key topics include: \n\nThe Essence of Kavod HaMet: Understanding the core Jewish value of “honoring the deceased” with dignity and modesty.\nA Journey of Purity: A respectful overview of the prayers\, the ritual washing\, and the dressing of the body in Tachrichim (simple white linen shrouds).\nCommunity and Continuity: How this quiet\, volunteer-led tradition strengthens the bonds of our synagogue and provides comfort to grieving families.\nJoin us to learn more about the beautiful\, hidden rituals that reflect our deepest Jewish values of equality\, respect\, and eternal care.\n\nREGISTER HERE \n\nChaiLights gatherings will give you a chance to learn\, taste and connect. \nEach gathering will start off with food and open conversation\, followed by a unique experience that will engage and inspire\, let us create and improve the world. \nThis project’s vibe is fun\, social and low-pressure\, with activities lead by community volunteers. It’s a great fit for Jews\, Jewish-adjacent and those who are just curious. \nBagels and coffee service at 9:15 am \n\n  \n\n Date / Time ChaiLights Experience Community Member Hosts Sunday January 25 9:15 am - 12:00 pm Participate in Bread for Peace bread baking Scott Silverstein Sunday February 1 9:15 am - 11:00 am Tu b'Shevat / Pruning Your Fruit Trees Jacob Holzberg-Pill Sunday February 8 9:15 am - 11:00 am Opening Courageous Conversations on Israel/Palestine Nancy Sugarman Marjorie Corbman Sunday February 15 9:15 am - 10:30 am 'Ask the Rabbi' conversation Rabbi Ariel Sunday March 22 9:15 am - 10:30 am End of Life Traditions Discussion Lynda Siegel Sunday March 29 9:15 am - 10:30 am How to Talk to Your Children and Grandchildren About Antisemitism Resource Therapists / Educators Sunday April 12 9:15 am - 10:30 am Opening Courageous Conversations on Israel/Palestine Nancy Sugarman Marjorie Corbman Sunday May 3 9:15 am - 10:30 am Making Pickles with a little Jewish Food History on the Side Alexa Weitzman Sunday May 10 9:15 am - 11:00 am Opening Courageous Conversations on Israel/Palestine Nancy Sugarman\n Marjorie Corbman

SUMMARY:YIVO Presents: Holocaust Distortion in Poland\, A Comparative European Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Holocaust distortion in Poland involves reshaping or minimizing facts about the Holocaust\, often emphasizing Polish victimhood while obscuring instances of local collaboration\, participation\, or indifference. It appears in political rhetoric\, memory laws\, public commemorations\, and attacks on critical scholarship. YIVO’s Poland vs. Holocaust History series examines these dynamics and situates the Polish case within a broader European context. \nThis lecture by Jan Grabowski will examine the phenomenon of Holocaust distortion in Poland within a broader comparative European framework. It explores how historical narratives about the Holocaust are reshaped\, minimized\, or selectively reinterpreted in public discourse\, politics\, education\, and law. Particular attention will be paid to the interaction between state-sponsored memory policies\, nationalist narratives\, and scholarly research\, as well as to the pressures faced by historians and educators. By comparing developments in Poland with those in other European countries—including Hungary\, Lithuania\, Germany\, and Russia—the lecture highlights both shared patterns and national specificities in confronting difficult pasts. The discussion addresses legal instruments\, public controversies\, commemorative practices\, and the role of civil society in shaping Holocaust memory. Ultimately\, the lecture asks how and why Holocaust distortion emerges\, what distinguishes distortion from legitimate historical debate\, and what the consequences are for democratic culture\, academic freedom\, and Europe’s collective understanding of the Holocaust. \nThis online event will take place via Zoom at 1:00pm ET. \nClick here for More Info / Registration

SUMMARY:Interfaith Family Conversations
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of an ongoing series of periodic gatherings of people in interfaith families or relationships*. The goal is to create space for couples or individuals from interfaith families to connect\, learn and support each other. This event is for Jewish and/or ‘adjacent’ individuals of any religious background. \nWe will meet Thursday\, March 26\, at 5:30 to 7:00 pm for a guided small group ‘check-in\,’ followed by a facilitated discussion about the interfaith family experience. Given the timing around Easter and Passover\, one conversation starter will be on navigating the holidays for interfaith families. \nThis program will be facilitated by Rachel Jolly. \nWe will work to provide childcare for those who register at least one week in advance. \nClick Here to Register \n*By interfaith families\, we are referring to folks who are part of families or relationships in which one party is Jewish and another is not. This includes those in multi-heritage families. Those who are Jews by choice are welcome as well. We learn from a diverse set of participants!
