DESCRIPTION:A fundraiser to support OZ Full Circle Preschool \nIn his ongoing project to play a concert in every one of Vermont’s 252 municipalities (www.PlayEveryTown.com)\, David tailors each program to the history and features of the hosting town. However\, certain pieces that speak to statewide matters are often repeated\, and the Ohavi Zedek concert is centered on three staples of the Play Every Town repertoire\, all monumental movements\, all in the triumphant key of C major: Debussy’s prelude “The Sunken Cathedral”\, written in the aftermath of the Great Flood of Paris; Ives’ “The Alcotts”\, which celebrates the humble yet transcendent joys of community and home music-making; and Liszt’s “The Chapel of William Tell”\, a paean to the mythic founder of Western democracy and the triumph over tyranny. The concert will also include smaller works pertinent to Vermont history by Mozart\, Elisabetta de Gambarini\, and Eve Beglarian. \nPurchase Tickets Here \n\nBio: \nComposer-pianist David Feur­zeig specializes in wide-ranging\, genre-defying recitals that bring together an astonishing variety of musical styles\, from ancient and classical to jazz\, avant-garde\, and popular traditions. These striking juxtapositions\, peppered with informative and humorous commentary\, create eye- and ear-opening programs that change how audiences hear all kinds of music—attracting new audiences to so-called “classical” concerts and bringing new insight to existing enthusiasts. \nDavid is the silver medalist of the 2001 World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest and recipient of the 2003 “Best New Rag” competition of the Old-Time Music Preservation Association (OM-PA). Since moving to Vermont in 2008\, he has enjoyed working with local groups as both performer and composer. He has been performed with and been commissioned by groups including the Vermont Symphony Orchestra\, the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble\, the Champlain Philharmonic\, Counterpoint\, and the Bella Voce Women’s Choir. \nHis music has been performed throughout the United States as well as in New Zealand\, Asia\, and Europe. His Songs of Love and Protest were selected by the Dresden Chamber Chorus for the city’s 800th jubilee in 2006 and premiered in the fabled Semper Opera House. A CD of his chamber music\, Lingua Franca\, is available on AMR/Naxos. \nDavid is currently a Professor of Music at UVM\, where he teaches composition and theory. While he is from away and thus will never be a “Vermonter”\, he intends to grow old and die here.

She blends classical training with electronic manipulation\, creating hauntingly beautiful and intricate soundscapes. Her solo cello pieces have garnered critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase. \n \n  \nMore about the concert series: Our Concert Series is a benefit program produced by a organized by OZ staff\, clergy and community member Michael Schacter.  Additional dates in 2024 and 2025 – to be announced. \nClick Here for Tickets \n  \nZoë Keating’s Full Biography \nComposer and performer Zoë Keating has spent the last 20 years exploring the landscape of sounds a string instrument can make. She coaxes sounds out of the very edges of her cello\, adeptly layering them into “swoon inducing” (San Francisco Weekly) music that is unclassifiable yet “a distinctive mix of old and new” (National Public Radio). She is known for her use of technology – which she uses to record and sample her cello onstage and in the studio – and for her DIY approach – composing\, recording and producing her works without the help of a record label. \nBorn in Canada\, Keating started playing the cello when she was eight and went on to pursue electronic music and contemporary composition as part of her Liberal Arts studies at Sarah Lawrence College. After graduation she moved to San Francisco and built a career as an information architect and data analyst while moonlighting as a cellist in rock bands. Keating eventually combined her love of music and technology\, using a computer to live-layer her cello and performing for late-night parties in the San Francisco warehouse in which she lived. \nKeating’s recorded works have achieved a surprising degree of popular ubiquity for a DIY artist. Her self-produced albums have several times reached #1 on the iTunes classical charts and spent many months on the Billboard classical charts. Her recordings are used as bumper music for NPR’s Morning Edition\, as the theme music to OnBeing\, as the thinking- music of the Sherlock Holmes character on CBS Elementary\, in HBO’s hit drama White Lotus\, in countless documentaries and in tens of thousands of online videos of everything from professional and amateur dance performances to rock climbing and gaming videos. \nKeating also composes for TV\, theater\, film and dance. She co-composed\, along with Jeff Russo\, the score for the HBO movie “Oslo”\, which earned them an Emmy Nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Music for a Television Movie. Her latest projects include scores for PBS’s 2022 series “Searching: Our Quest for Meaning in the Age of Science” and the drama “For The Love of a Woman”\, by Italian director Guido Chiesa\, scheduled for release in 2024. \nIn addition to her recordings\, Keating performs to rapt audiences around the world. Each performance is unique as she spontaneously improvises around her pieces\, demonstrates how she makes them and tells the stories behind them. \nA vocal advocate for the rights of artists and creators\, Keating writes and speaks often about copyright and the mechanics of the music industry economy. She was elected a governor of the San Francisco chapter of the Recording Academy\, named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and served as a boardmember of CASH Music\, a nonprofit organization that built open source digital tools for musicians and labels. \nAs a cellist Zoë has played with a wide range of artists\, including Imogen Heap\, Amanda Palmer\, Guy Sigsworth\, Tears for Fears\, DJ Shadow\, Dan Hicks\, Thomas Dolby\, Sean Ono Lennon\, John Vanderslice\, Rasputina\, Pomplamoose and Paolo Nutini. \nZoë currently lives in Burlington\, VT and is working on another album for release in 2024. \n“…a distinctive mix of old and new — layers of sound\, that feel more like orchestrations than a solo instrument. “ – National Public Radio \n“Swoon-inducing. DESCRIPTION:Click Here for Tickets \nWe’re pleased to welcome our recent visiting clergy member Rabbi Jessica Kate Meyer (vocals) and Boston-based musicians Hankus Netsky (piano) and Itay Dayan (clarinet).  Their trio is called Fun Yener Velt” (“From Another World”). \nJoin us for a spirited performance to benefit OZ’s Full Circle Preschool. \nSoulful Jewish melodies rescued from a Carpathian farming village \nJoyfully raucous Klezmer and Yiddish theater tunes  \nand a few surprises… \n  \nJoin us beforehand for a wine & cheese benefit art show reception at 6:30 pm.  \nMore about the concert: The trio’s first set will feature a collection of Yiddish folk songs\, theater tunes & spiritual nigunim (wordless melodies) that were brought to the Boston Area in 1967 by Auschwitz concentration camp survivor Morris Hollender\, one of just a few surviving residents of a Carpathian village in Czechoslovakia. (Our evening’s pianist Netsky had the privilege of recording many of Hollender’s works.) \nThe second set will include a variety of songs and stories including music of Leonard Cohen and Thelonious Monk. \nEvent proceeds will benefit Full Circle Preschool. \nClick Here for Tickets \nAbout the Musicians\n \nJessica Kate Meyer is the Rosh Tefillah & Artist-in-Residence of Hebrew College\, where she was ordained in 2014. Jessica is a prayer leader\, storyteller\, vocalist\, and rabbi\, who served as rabbi-hazzan at Romemu in NYC\, and most recently\, at The Kitchen in San Francisco. She has studied sacred Jewish music with masters from Ashkenazi and Mizrahi traditions and has performed as a vocalist with ensembles in the United States and Israel. In a previous life\, Jessica appeared in film\, theater\, and television projects in Europe and the United States: most notably\, as a principal role in the Oscar-winning film\, The Pianist. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nHankus Netsky is a multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, and ethnomusicologist. He is co-chair of New England Conservatory’s Contemporary Musical Arts Department and founder and director of the Klezmer Conservatory Band\, an internationally renowned Yiddish music ensemble. He has composed extensively for film\, theater\, and television\, collaborated closely with such artists as Itzhak Perlman\, Robin Williams\, Joel Grey\, Theodore Bikel\, and Robert Brustein\, and produced numerous recordings\, including 10 by the Klezmer Conservatory Band. He received the Yosl Mlotek Award and a “Forward Fifty” award for his role in the resurgence of traditional Eastern European Jewish ethnic musical culture. He was also awarded a New England Conservatory Outstanding Alumni award\, along with the school’s Louis Krasner and Lawrence Lesser awards for Excellence in Teaching. \n  \n  \n \nItay Dayan is an Israeli clarinetist currently based in Boston\, Massachusetts. Itay played with various ensembles spanning different musical worlds\, such as the Klezmer Conservatory band\, Meitar Ensemble and the Israel Klezmer Orchestra. His most recent endeavor\, Hoffman’s Farewell\, is a new and unique klezmer album drawing inspiration from traditional and contemporary sources. Currently pursuing his Master’s degree at the New England Conservatory\, Itay won scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation\, Ronen Foundation\, Ima Foundation\, and the Zvi and Ofra Meitar Family Foundation. Itay is also a recipient of the Siday Fellowship for Musical Creativity by the Jerusalem Institute of Contemporary Music. \n  \n\nAbout Morris Hollender\nA survivor of Auschwitz concentration camp\, Morris Hollender came to the Boston area from Czechoslovakia in 1967. A child from a renowned musical family in the Munkacs/Beregsacz region\, he learned nusach (musical style) and melodies from his Uncle Shloyme\, Yiddish folk songs from his mother and extended family\, and nigunim (wordless melodies) from his father and his Uncle Berl. Hollender’s role as Ba’al Tefile and Ba’al Koreh at Temple Beth Israel in Waltham\, MA became the cornerstone of his musical legacy in the United States and across the world.
