DESCRIPTION:Kol Nidre marks the beginning of Yom Kippur\, the Day of Atonement and the holiest day of the Jewish year. As the sun sets\, our community gathers for an evening of beautiful music\, heartfelt prayer\, and reflection as we begin a day dedicated to forgiveness\, healing\, and renewal. Read below about what makes this service special. \n \nThe Torah Processional\nOne of the evening’s most anticipated traditions is our Torah Processional. As the opening strains of the haunting Kol Nidre melody are played by Chris Berger at 5:50 pm. At 6:00 PM\, fourteen Torah scrolls are carried into the sanctuary by honored members of our community who have been invited in advance. \nThose entrusted with carrying a Torah include past presidents\, beloved educators\, leaders in social justice and caring work\, volunteers who help sustain Jewish life at Ohavi Zedek\, longtime lay leaders\, and one of our teen leaders—reminding us that Jewish tradition is always carried from one generation to the next. \nJoining them are children carrying plush Torahs\, creating a beautiful procession that spans generations. Among the Torah scrolls is our historic Kahn Torah\, rescued from Germany during Kristallnacht—a powerful reminder of the resilience of the Jewish people and our shared responsibility to carry our traditions forward. \nThe Kol Nidre Prayer\nFollowing the processional\, Cantor Jessica Silverberg chants the ancient Kol Nidre prayer three times\, as is traditional. The service continues with Maariv (the traditional evening prayer service that begins Yom Kippur) and Rabbi Ariel’s Kol Nidre sermon\, inviting us into themes of forgiveness\, accountability\, and the possibility of beginning again. \nA Community Message from Our Congregation President\nLynda Siegel will reflect on our shared journey as a congregation and the year ahead. \nWhy is the Kol Nidre prayer sung three times?\nJewish tradition repeats the Kol Nidre prayer three times\, allowing its ancient words to settle into our hearts as we enter the holiest day of the Jewish year. Each repetition deepens the experience\, inviting us to leave behind the distractions of daily life and fully enter this sacred day. \nChildren & Families\nChildren are warmly invited to participate in the Torah Processional by carrying one of our plush Torahs. If your child would like to join the procession\, we’d be delighted to include them. No sign up is necessary. Just arrive at and line up in the preschool hallway at 5:45 PM. \nFasting\nYom Kippur is traditionally observed as a fast day. DESCRIPTION:As the sun begins to set on Yom Kippur\, we gather for the final chapter in our journey of teshuvah—often translated as “return.” Through prayer\, the timeless story of Jonah\, the moving service of Ne’ilah\, Havdalah\, and the final blast of the shofar\, we prepare to carry the lessons of this sacred day into the year ahead. \n \nWhat Makes This Journey Special \nMinchah\nOur afternoon begins with Minchah\, the traditional afternoon prayer service\, inviting us once again into prayer\, reflection\, and return. \nThe Book of Jonah\nWe hear the biblical story of Jonah—a story of running\, returning\, forgiveness\, and second chances. Read each Yom Kippur\, Jonah reminds us that transformation is always possible and that compassion often extends farther than we imagine. \nNe’ilah Awards (Tentatively at 6pm)\nAs part of our Ne’ilah service\, we recognize a longtime member of the Ohavi Zedek community whose dedication and service have made a lasting impact on congregational life. This annual tradition celebrates the people whose commitment helps our community thrive. \nNe’ilah – The Closing Service\nAs sunset approaches\, we gather for Ne’ilah (“closing”)\, the final and most emotionally powerful service of Yom Kippur. Jewish tradition imagines the gates of this sacred day slowly closing as we offer one last opportunity for prayer\, reflection\, and return. \nHavdalah\, Community Shofar Wave and the Final Shofar\nWe conclude Yom Kippur with Havdalah\, a beautiful ceremony that marks the transition from the holiness of the day back into everyday life. Together we’ll bless the wine and prepare for one final\, unforgettable moment. \nThis year\, we invite everyone who knows how to blow a shofar to bring their own and take part in our Community Shofar Wave. Shofar blowers will line the sanctuary from back to front\, creating a wave of sound that moves through the congregation before culminating in the final tekiah gedolah (long blast). Whether you’re holding a shofar or simply listening\, this powerful moment reminds us that each of us has a voice\, and together we create something far greater than any one of us could alone. \nFollowing the final shofar\, we will officially conclude the fast after the appearance of three stars in the evening sky—a traditional sign that Yom Kippur has come to a close. Our clergy and volunteers will watch for the stars\, and we anticipate concluding the service and beginning our Community Break-the-Fast at approximately 7:35 p.m.\, though the exact timing follows this longstanding Jewish tradition. \nDuring the afternoon service before Ne’ilah\, there will be an opportunity for congregants to come forward to the Ark for a meaningful personal moment of reflection and prayer with the Torah scrolls. \nChildren & Families\nChildren are warmly invited to participate in the Torah Processional and sharing in carrying one of our plush Torahs. We gather in the sukkah—a simple outdoor shelter that recalls our ancestors’ journey through the wilderness while reminding us that life’s greatest blessings are often found in one another\, around a shared table\, and beneath the open sky. \n \nJoin us as we welcome Sukkot with evening prayer\, music\, and the joy of beginning this week-long celebration together. \nWhat Makes This Service Special \nWorship in the Sukkah\nWeather permitting\, portions of our celebration will take place in or around our beautiful sukkah\, bringing worship outdoors and closer to the natural world. \nA Week of Hospitality Begins\nJewish tradition encourages us to welcome guests into the sukkah. Throughout the week\, Ohavi Zedek will gather different parts of our community for meals\, conversations\, celebrations\, and learning\, making the sukkah a place of connection and belonging. \nGratitude\nSukkot reminds us to pause and appreciate life’s blessings—our homes\, our relationships\, the harvest\, and the community that surrounds us. \nAbout the Sukkah\nA sukkah is a temporary outdoor shelter built for the holiday of Sukkot. Join us for a joyful morning of fresh apple cider\, hands-on activities\, community\, and seasonal fun. \n \nBeginning at 10:00 a.m.\, families with young children (ages 0–5) and our preschool community are invited to gather for apple cider pressing\, edible sukkah making\, and other family-friendly Sukkot activities. Throughout the morning\, families are invited to experience Sukkot in whatever way is most meaningful for them\, participating in the Sukkot Day 2 service\, the family activities\, or a combination of both. \nAt 10:45 a.m.\, our Jewish Journeys students and families will participate in the Sukkot Day 2 service before joining the Presstival around 11:00 a.m. to continue the celebration with younger children and families. \nAt 11:45 a.m.\, everyone is invited to stay for our Community Bagel Brunch\, a wonderful opportunity to enjoy good food\, connect with friends old and new\, and celebrate Sukkot together. \nWhether you’re worshipping in the sanctuary\, pressing fresh cider\, creating an edible sukkah\, sharing brunch\, or simply enjoying time with other families\, this is a wonderful way to experience the joy\, gratitude\, and harvest traditions of Sukkot. \nBring Your Own Jug!\nIf you’d like to take some fresh-pressed cider home\, bring a clean jug or empty cider container to fill. Simchat Torah—which means “Rejoicing with the Torah”—marks the completion of our annual cycle of Torah readings and the immediate beginning of a new one. \n \nRather than placing the Torah back on the shelf\, we celebrate it with music\, dancing\, and community. We read the final words of Deuteronomy and then immediately begin again with the opening verses of Genesis\, reminding us that Jewish learning is never finished. \nEvery ending becomes a new beginning. \nWhether you’ve celebrated Simchat Torah your whole life or are experiencing it for the first time\, you’ll find an evening filled with joy\, participation\, and belonging. \nWhat Makes This Celebration Special \nSeven Joyful Hakafot\nThe heart of the evening is a series of seven hakafot (processions with the Torah)\, as we sing\, dance\, and celebrate together. Everyone is invited to join the dancing as the congregation circles the sanctuary in a joyful expression of gratitude\, celebration\, and community. \nLive Music\nOur celebration comes alive with spirited music led by Cantor Jessica Silverberg\, joined by a live band featuring Marty Fogel on saxophone and other musicians. Singing\, dancing\, and celebration fill the sanctuary as people of every generation come together.

One of Ohavi Zedek’s favorite traditions is our joyful Torah tunnel\, where the community forms two lines with raised arms as the Torahs and dancers weave their way through—a moment that always fills the room with laughter\, music\, and energy. \nWhether you dance every hakafah or simply clap along from your seat\, you’ll be part of the celebration. \nWhy Do We Begin Again?\nEach year\, we finish reading the Torah and immediately begin again with the opening words of Genesis: \n“In the beginning…” \nRather than seeing the Torah as a book we’ve completed\, Judaism teaches that every reading offers new insights\, new questions\, and new opportunities for growth. Simchat Torah reminds us that Jewish learning—and our own spiritual journeys—are never truly finished. \nHow to Attend\nEveryone is welcome. Simchat Torah is one of the most accessible and joyful evenings on the Jewish calendar\, and no prior knowledge is needed to participate. Whether you come to dance\, sing\, celebrate\, or simply experience the joy of the evening\, you’ll find a warm welcome at Ohavi Zedek. \nFollowing the celebration\, everyone is invited to enjoy ice cream and conversation as we celebrate together.
