SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn // The Kurdish-led Local Democracy Revolution in the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:// An Illustrated Talk by Author and Translator Janet Biehl\nGraduation day at the women’s academy in Raqqa\, a place where ISIS once sold women it captured as sex slaves. Janet Biehl in back row center wearing scarf. \nDuring the war against the Islamic State (from 2014)\, the U.S.-led coalition coordinated with Kurdish-led ground forces to defeat ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Almost unreported in U.S. media\, those Kurdish fighters represented a new society in northeastern Syria that\, since 2012\, had been advancing gender equality\, religious and ethnic inclusivity\, and bottom-up democracy. \nThis astonishingly progressive revolutionary project\, which continues to this day\, was inspired in great part by the writings of a Jewish Vermonter\, the late Murray Bookchin (d. 2006). His close friend and colleague Janet Biehl tells the story. \nRecommended pre- or post-talk article from the HuffPost: \n\nAmerica’s Best Allies Against ISIS Are Inspired By A Bronx-Born Libertarian Socialist — Syrian Kurds have launched an unlikely radical experiment in governance without hierarchy\, patriarchy or capitalism. \nSee also this quite interesting article from the New York Times: With Fire and Song\, Kurds in Turkey Hail the Start of Spring. March 21\, 2026. \n\nThe valiant fighters of the YPJ\, the Women’s Protection Units\, who helped defeat ISIS in Syria in 2014-2019. Janet Biehl is in the center of the back row. \n  \nPlease Register Here to Help Us Plan \n\nAbout OZ’s Lunch and Learns: \nSpeakers cover a wide range of topics. A delicious lunch will be offered\, which is served promptly at NOON. The talks begin at about 12:15pm and end no later than 1:15pm (including some time for Q&A). \nSuggested cash contribution of $10 for food can be paid on the registration form or collected at the event — but feel free to give more or less. Please also consider being a sponsor of one or more Lunch & Learn talks. Information on this is on Lunch & Learn talk registration pages\, or contact OZ Program & Engagement Manager Evan Rose at: 802-864-0218 ext 801. \n\n\n 2025-2026 Series of Lunch and Learn Talks: Thursday\, September 18\, 2025: Jewish Life & Antisemitism in Today's Germany // a talk by UVM Professor Alan Steinweis Thursday\, October 16\, 2025: Working to Advance Legal Protections for Animals // a talk by Animal Law lawyer Laura Ireland Thursday\, November 20\, 2025: From Berlin to Hollywood: the life and times of Ernst Lubitsch\, Fritz Lang\, and Billy Wilder // a talk\, with film clips\, by UVM Lane Series Director Natalie Neuert Thursday\, December 18\, 2025: An Introduction to the Me2 Orchestra // a presentation by Orchestra Manager and Cellist Phoenix Crockett Thursday\, January 15\, 2026: Supporting Kids & Families -- the Work of the Boys & Girls Club of Burlington // an illustrated talk by Executive Director Tanya Benosky Thursday\, February 19\, 2026: Volunteers Helping People Seeking Asylum // An Introduction by CASAN Board Members Jan Steinbauer and Kim Watkin Thursday\, March 26\, 2026: The Kurdish-led Local Democracy Revolution in the Middle East // an illustrated talk by author and translator Janet Biehl Thursday\, April 16\, 2026: Jewish Traditions in Classical Choral Music // an exploration by Musicologist & Choral Conductor Nathaniel G. SUMMARY:Interfaith Family Conversations
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of an ongoing series of periodic gatherings of people in interfaith families or relationships*. The goal is to create space for couples or individuals from interfaith families to connect\, learn and support each other. This event is for Jewish and/or ‘adjacent’ individuals of any religious background. \nWe will meet Thursday\, March 26\, at 5:30 to 7:00 pm for a guided small group ‘check-in\,’ followed by a facilitated discussion about the interfaith family experience. Given the timing around Easter and Passover\, one conversation starter will be on navigating the holidays for interfaith families. \nThis program will be facilitated by Rachel Jolly. \nWe will work to provide childcare for those who register at least one week in advance. \nClick Here to Register \n*By interfaith families\, we are referring to folks who are part of families or relationships in which one party is Jewish and another is not. This includes those in multi-heritage families. Those who are Jews by choice are welcome as well. We learn from a diverse set of participants!

SUMMARY:Israeli Dancing - Drop In
DESCRIPTION:Israeli folkdance is a joyous folk art form that is easy to start and difficult to stop. It draws from many cultures and expresses itself in dances that range in complexity and speed. See this article for more information. \nJoin hosts Adele\, Lani and Mitch and a friendly friendly group of people that gathers periodically on Zoom or in person to enjoy the folkdances of Israel! \nWe mostly dance around a circle so no partner is required. We have a large repertoire of beginner-friendly dances. New dancers are encouraged to come at the beginning of the session to benefit from instruction. Please wear shoes with clean soles. \nThis program is free with an optional donation. \nRegister Here \nBecause of ongoing concerns about covid and other circulating viruses\, the group would greatly appreciate attendees wearing a high quality mask such as N95 or KN95. \n

SUMMARY:Selling of Chametz
DESCRIPTION:Please join Rabbi Ariel for a hands-on learning experience. In preparation for Pesach\, it is customary to sell our unused chametz (mechirat chametz) so that it may be repurchased after Passover. Although widely practiced\, this process is rarely witnessed and can often feel confusing.  \nOn March 31\, Rabbi Ariel will conduct the sale of our community’s chametz while guiding us step by step through how the process works.

SUMMARY:Pesach
DESCRIPTION:The holiday of Passover (Pesach) is a celebration! \nPassover\, one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the Jewish calendar commemorates the exodus from Egypt\, the journey toward redemption\, and our personal paths as we move toward freedom. \nCelebrated with the Passover Seder\, an organized meal\, we tell the story of the exodus\, the trials and tribulations of the people\, the rabbinic interpretations of the text\, and seek to find ourselves amidst the story. \nWhen is Passover in 2026? \nThe first night of Passover is Wednesday evening\, April 1st\, with two days of holiday observance (for those in the diaspora) until Friday night\, April 3rd. \nThe intermediate days of Passover are from April 4th to April 7th\, with the final two days beginning on Tuesday evening\, April 7th\, and concluding (for those in the diaspora) on Thursday night\, April 9th.

SUMMARY:Community Passover Seder: Flavors of the Diaspora
DESCRIPTION:Reserve Your Seat \n\nThe Passover Seder is one of those nights that so many of us carry in our hearts — the familiar melodies that rise around the table each year\, the recipes that taste better than ever this one time a year\, the feeling of a table stretched just a little longer to make room for one more. \nOn the second night of Passover\, we’ll gather for our OZ Community Seder\, led by Rabbi Ariel and Cantor Silverberg. It will be an evening of conversation\, music\, storytelling\, and some much needed joy. Together\, we’ll retell the Exodus story — both because it’s tradition\, and because the themes still matter: resilience\, hope\, and the stubborn\, beautiful human longing for freedom. \nAnd of course\, we’ll gather around a truly special meal. Dinner will be prepared by Chef Richard Witting of Firefly Catering & Isole Events\, with two menu options exploring traditional Passover foods from across the diaspora\, and desserts by his partner\, Anna Mays of Old World Baking. \nMore than anything\, this night is about being together — around the table\, in conversation\, in song\, in the comfort that happens within community. Whether this is your first Seder or your hundredth\, you are welcome. Bring a friend. Bring your whole self. Bring your appetite. \nPlease take a look at the menu and register by Friday March 27th. We’d love to have you with us. \n  \n\n  \nFrom North to West: Classic Ohavi Zedek featuring Ashkenazi-inspired\ndishes drawn from recipes shared by members of our own community —\nfood with memory folded into it: w. Witting is a Vermont-based chef\, food historian\, and caterer whose work brings research into the kitchen and onto the table. For three years\, he served as Kitchen Manager at Ohavi Zedek Synagogue and has extensive experience cooking in Vermont’s synagogue community. He has also developed Jewish food programming that pairs meals with public-facing education—most notably Chanukah and the History of the Latke (December 2020) and Tu B’Shevat: The New Year of the Trees (January 2021). Alongside his culinary work\, he researches and writes on Vermont history and foodways\, designing menus and educational meals that translate archival and cultural history into thoughtful\, memorable dining experiences.
