SUMMARY:Rosh Hashanah Day 1
DESCRIPTION:Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) invites us to begin the year with gratitude\, reflection\, and hope. Join our community for the first morning of this sacred holiday as we pray\, sing\, hear the Torah read\, and reflect on the possibilities of the year ahead. \nThe service includes Shacharit (the traditional morning prayer service)\, Torah reading\, and Musaf (an additional prayer service observed on Shabbat and Jewish holidays). Because the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat this year\, the shofar (an ancient instrument\, traditionally made from a ram’s horn) will not besounded today. Instead\, we invite you to return for Rosh Hashanah Day 2\, when we’ll hear the shofar’s stirring call together. \n \nChildren & Families\nChildren are always welcome in our sanctuary. Families with young children are warmly invited to participate in our Rosh Hashanah Family Experience – Tots (Ages 0-5) and Rosh Hashanah Family Service – Kids (Ages 6-12)\, offered alongside the main service. \nSnacks will be available for children throughout the morning. \nNeed a quieter place to worship or take a break? You’re welcome to use our Samuelson-Saiger Sanctuary\, where the service is livestreamed\, or visit our Library Sensory & Quiet Room. \nHow to Attend:\nHigh Holiday services are open to everyone. Services are free for Ohavi Zedek members\, young adults under 30\, and children. Tickets are required for other adult guests. Please register in advance. Everyone who registers will receive a confirmation email with access to our digital Machzor (High Holiday prayer book) and\, where available\, a link to our livestream. \nNew Here? Whether it’s your first High Holiday or your first visit to Ohavi Zedek\, our What to Expect guide will help you feel at home.

SUMMARY:OZ Book Club - From Sun to Sun by Kenneth Wishnia
DESCRIPTION:The OZ Monthly Book Club meets monthly and welcomes adult readers. Book selections are determined by the group\, with topics that are related to Jewish themes and concepts. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nFrom Sun to Sun by Kenneth Wishnia \nFrom Sun to Sun presents two parallel stories separated by 25 centuries. The first is set in modern New York City\, featuring a hard-working smart-mouthed Latina investigator\, Felicity Ortega Pérez\, as she hunts for a missing person who holds the clue to an ancient mystery. \nThe ancient story is a radical revision of the biblical Book of Ruth. When her husband dies under strange circumstances\, Ruth must join the exiles returning to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple in order to secure a future for herself and her grieving mother-in-law\, Naomi. Unfortunately\, the returning exiles include religious leaders who plan to “purify” the land by expelling all the foreign women.

SUMMARY:Fifth Annual Reverse Tashlich
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our 5th annual OZ-led community waterway cleanup at Burlington’s Urban Reserve\, near the Burlington Bike Path! \nTake note: We are meeting at a new location this year!\, \nReverse Tashlich 2026 is part of a global Jewish movement bringing communities together to care for our environment and help prevent trash from entering our waterways. \nThis event is appropriate for ages 10 and up and will include group cleanup activities\, with support from community members involved with the Burlington Parks Commission. \nPlease wear sturdy shoes\, long pants\, and long sleeves. Bring bug spray\, sun screen and work gloves if you have them; gloves will also be available. \nPlease arrive a few minutes before our 1:00 PM start time. Park in the lot near the A-Dog Skatepark and the Community Sailing Center. We’ll gather there to sign a Release of Liability form before heading together to our cleanup area. \nWe’ll begin with a brief centering ritual connecting our environmental work to the spirit of Reverse Tashlich\, and then get to work caring for this special part of Burlington’s waterfront. \nCome ready to lend a hand\, connect with community\, and help keep Burlington’s waterways clean! \n  \nREGISTER HERE \n  \n\n  \n What is Reverse Tashlich? \nReverse Tashlich is an innovative approach to Jewish environmental stewardship. \nIn the traditional ritual of Tashlich on Rosh Hashanah\, we go to a body of water and symbolically cast our “sins” into it\, beginning the New Year with a clean heart. Reverse Tashlich transforms that symbolism into action by removing human “sin” from the water. \nIt is an opportunity to come together in a hands-on effort to clean beaches\, rivers\, lakes and shorelines—removing plastic\, trash\, and other debris that threaten marine ecosystems and the health of our planet. \n  \n \nWhy Reverse Tashlich? \nEvery year\, millions of tons of plastic waste enter our waterways\, suffocating marine life and polluting the Earth. We cannot sit idly by while this destruction continues. \nReverse Tashlich empowers individuals\, families\, and communities to take immediate\, tangible action to help restore the health of our lake and waterfront. \nThis is our chance not only to reflect\, but to act. \nThe Mitzvah of Bal Tashchit—the Jewish prohibition against needless waste and destruction—calls on us to protect the world around us. By removing the waste we have allowed to accumulate\, we protect marine life and the ecosystems essential for life on Earth\, while actively fulfilling a Mitzvah. \n  \n\n \nReverse Tashlich is about more than cleaning up trash—\nit’s about reclaiming our connection as Jews to the natural world\, \nto each other\, and to our shared responsibility to protect the planet. \nTogether\, we can make waves for change.\nGet involved today—because we need the Sea. \nלֹא עָלֶֽיךָ הַמְּלָאכָה לִגְמוֹר\, וְלֹא אַתָּה בֶן חוֹרִין לְהִבָּטֵל מִמֶּֽנָּה\nIt is not your duty to complete the work\,\nbut neither are you free to neglect it.\nPirkei Avot 2:16 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Selichot Evening of Learning and Music 2026
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we officially kick off the High Holiday season with selichot. This year\, Cantor Silverberg will be joined by the musicians of the Zamru ensemble for a service that draws on the rich diversity of Jewish liturgical and musical traditions. Through communal singing\, including familiar melodies and new musical settings\, we’ll explore the many ways Jewish communities have given voice to these ancient prayers. Rabbi Ariel will offer kavanot throughout the service\, inviting us to pause and reflect on the meaning of these ancient prayers and the season we are entering. \n \nThe Selichot prayers are penitential prayers said before and during the High Holy Days and other fast days throughout the year. In Hebrew\, selichot translates to “forgiveness\,” and indeed there is an emphasis in these prayers on the merciful attributes with which G-d is said to govern the world. We begin and end the season of repentance with the same words\, calling out to the compassionate G-d who we hope will accept our prayers. Our tradition begins with Selichot on the Saturday evening just before Rosh HaShanah. Prayers are read and sung with meditations considered as individuals are encouraged to reflect on the past year and the changes they wish to make in the upcoming one.
