She is the author of Sacred Bonds of Solidarity: The Rise of Jewish Internationalism in Nineteenth-Century France (2006). Her more recent book is The Archive Thief: The Man Who Salvaged French Jewish History in the Wake of the Holocaust (Oxford University Press\, 2015). \nIn The Archive Thief\, Leff tells the gripping story of the Jewish historian Zosa Szajkowski. Born into poverty in Russian Poland in 1911\, Szajkowski was a self-made man who made a life for himself as a journalist in 1930s Paris\, and then\, after a harrowing escape to New York in 1941\, as a scholar. Although he never taught at a university or even earned a PhD\, Szajkowski became one of the world’s foremost experts on the history of the Jews in modern France\, publishing in Yiddish\, English\, and Hebrew. His work opened up new ways of thinking about Jewish emancipation\, economic and social modernization\, and the rise of modern anti-Semitism. \nYet as Leff recounts\, Szajkowski stole tens of thousands of archival documents related to French Jewish history from public archives and collections in France and moved them\, illicitly\, to New York. Why did this respectable historian become a thief? And why did librarians in the United States and Israel accept these materials from him\, turning a blind eye to the signs of ownership they bore? \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:The Transformation of a Rabbi\, A Synagogue\, and Vermont's Religious Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Two local historians and archivists from Ohavi Zedek Synagogue in Burlington\, Jeff Potash\, Ph.D.\, and Aaron Goldberg\, J.D.\, will speak about the impact and legacy of Rabbi Max B. Wall (1915-2009). They will focus on his time as a U.S. Army chaplain in Europe during World War II and his work to construct the current Ohavi Zedek synagogue and community center in Burlington. Rabbi Wall was closely connected to Saint Michael’s College as a professor. An endowment in his honor has sponsored this annual lecture since 1986. This year\, for the first time\, the lecture will focus on Rabbi Wall himself. \nThe talk\, which is free and open to the public\, will take place at Saint Michael’s College’s McCarthy Arts Center Recital Hall.

DESCRIPTION:Ohavi Zedek offers regular minyan services to meet the worship needs of our community and especially to aid those members of our community who are reciting Kaddish in memory of a recently deceased loved one or on a Yahrzeit. Services are held Sunday-Thursday evenings at 7:00 on Zoom. Ohavi Zedek’s minyan is traditional and egalitarian. Join these casual discussions about the book. \n \nStranger in My Own Land: Palestine\, Israel and One Family’s Story of Home by Fida Jiryis \nAfter the 1993 Oslo Accords\, a handful of Palestinians were allowed to return to their hometowns in Israel. Fida Jiryis and her family were among them. This beautifully written memoir tells the story of their journey\, which is also the story of Palestine\, from the Nakba to the present-a seventy-five-year tale of conflict\, exodus\, occupation\, return and search for belonging\, seen through the eyes of one writer and her family. Jiryis reveals how her father\, Sabri\, a PLO leader and advisor to Yasser Arafat\, chose exile in 1970 because of his work. Her own childhood in Beirut was shaped by regional tensions\, the Lebanese Civil War and the 1982 Israeli invasion\, which led to her mother’s death. Thirteen years later\, the family made an unexpected return to Fassouta\, their village of origin in the Galilee. But Fida\, twenty-two years old and full of love for her country\, had no idea what she was getting into.
