SUMMARY:Reverse Tashlich Waterway Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our OZ-led community waterway cleanup at Burlington’s Barge Canal. \nThis event is appropriate for people of all ages\, and will include group clean up activities facilitated by community members who have been involved in the Barge Canal area management. \nPlease arrive a few minutes before 10:00 AM and park in the parking lot at Dealer.com at 1 Howard Street. Walk across the street to the chain link gate (it is locked) and enter the Barge Canal just to the right of the fence. Look for the registration table with the big reddish-orange umbrella and come over to sign the Release of Liability form. \nAbout Reverse Tashlich:  This program is a recent add-on to the Jewish traditional Tashlich\, an annual ritual in which some jewish people throw crumbs of bread into a body of water during the Rosh Hashanah holiday.  The physical act of tossing crumbs is metaphor for the mental process of seeking to toss away bad habits and improve ourselves in the coming year. \nBurlington’s ‘Reverse Tashlich’ began in 2022 when\, we join 240+ other communities in this new traditional of cleaning up a body of water. Read more about the movement here.  Read this Seven Days article. \nClick here to RSVP \nHere’s a document used for the event. \n

SUMMARY:Yom Kippur Afternoon Discussion: Holiness Every Day
DESCRIPTION:Holiness Every Day: Carrying the Lessons of Yom Kippur Into the Rest of the Year \nDuring the afternoon service of Yom Kippur\, after we have been fasting and praying for close to 20 hours\, we read from the “Holiness code“ in Leviticus 19. Instead of further expounding on themes of sin and atonement\, it gives multiple examples of how to pursue holiness as individuals and in community. What is this text doing in the middle of Yom Kippur\, and how can it guide us as we reenter our regular lives after the final shofar blast of Ne’ilah?” \nThis discussion will be led by Suzanne Griffel\, a rabbi in Chicago who will have the good fortune to spend Yom Kippur in Burlington this year. \nThis gathering will take place in the Yurt.
