DESCRIPTION:The Kulanu Antisemitism Workgroup of Ohavi Zedek Synagogue presents:\nNavigating Israel: A Social Justice Speaker Series. \nAntisemitism Definitions and Free Speech\nKenneth S. Stern\, J.D. (appearing remotely)\nIn Person Only (not on Zoom) \nKenneth S. Stern is the director of the Bard Center for the Study of Hate. \nMr. Stern is an award-winning author and attorney\, and was most recently executive director of the Justus & Karin Rosenberg Foundation. Before that he was director of the division on antisemitism and extremism at the American Jewish Committee\, where he worked for 25 years. \nHis op-eds have appeared in newpapers and magazines around the world and he frequently appears on national and international television and radio programs. Mr. Stern was the lead drafter of the “working definition” of antisemitism. He is co-chair of the Higher Education/Hate Studies working group of the Eradicate Hate Global Summit\, and serves on the board of the Journal of Hate Studies. \nHis 2020 book\, The Conflict Over the Conflict: The Israel/Palestine Campus Debate (New Jewish Press\, 2020)\, has been called a “must read\,” “thoughtful and provocative\,” a “gift\,” a “rare and uncompromising testament to free expression” and a “blueprint for how to navigate the ‘conflict over the conflict’ on campus.” Its first chapter is entitled “Thinking about Thinking\,” and draws from hate studies to explain how our thinking changes when our identity is tethered to an issue of perceived justice or injustice. \nMost recently (University of Toronto Press\, 2025)\, Stern is the editor of Simply Human: A Guide to Understanding and Combating Hate\, an easy-to-read book in which an international team of hate studies experts join forces\, guiding us to a better understanding of human hatred\, what works to confront it\, what doesn’t\, and why. \n— Doors 5:00pm\, Program 5:30-7:00pm. \nPLEASE REGISTER

While hosted by Ohavi Zedek\, it is designed for everyone. Jewish families\, interfaith families\, neighbors\, and families of all backgrounds are warmly welcome. No prior yoga experience is necessary\, and modifications are offered for all bodies. \nThis session will: \n\nEmphasize well-being before performance\nBe accessible to beginners\nBegin with connection and reflection before moving into the yoga practice\n\nAbout our Instructor\nNina Sklar is a certified Level I Iyengar Yoga teacher with four years of teaching experience. Her upbeat\, approachable classes use movement and breath to help students feel good\, quiet the mind\, and deepen awareness\, with modifications offered for a range of abilities. DESCRIPTION:// an illustrated presentation by Lunch & Learn Coordinator\, and former journal editor\, Wayne Senville \nReflecting on a trip to the Alsace-Lorraine region of France\, Senville will discuss: \n— the life of prominent 20th century French editor\, journalist\, women’s rights activist\, and “pan-European” political activist Louise Weiss;\n— the growing number of STOLPERSTEINE memorial stones installed in the city of Strasbourg and throughout Europe;\n— the Nazis’ murder of 86 Jews at the Natzweiler-Struthof Concentration Camp (built on the site of a popular Alsatian ski resort) to create a collection of Jewish skulls and skeletons; and\n— why renowned artist Marc Chagall’s dramatic “Peace Window” in the town of Sarrebourg includes scenes of Jesus’s life and Crucifixion. \nAbout Our Speaker: \nWayne Senville served as a planner in the National Park Service’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Office\, and\, after moving to Vermont\, worked as planning program manager for Vermont’s Department of Housing & Community Affairs. Senville then (from 1988 through 2014) served as publisher and editor of the Planning Commissioners Journal . He also served for 11 years as a member of the Burlington Planning Commission; received the citizen planner of the year award from the Northern New England Chapter of the American Planning Association; and was honored with the City of Burlington’s Herb Bloomenthal Award for Community Activism. \nWayne Senville has previously given two Lunch & Learn talks at Ohavi Zedek. His first talk recounted highlights of his six weeks’ travel from Maryland to California\, during which he met with planners and planning commissioners in 20 cities and towns in 12 states (and Washington\, DC) located along U.S. Route 50. Senville’s second OZ talk focused on the impact  and significance of the 1903 Kishinev pogrom\, the first pogrom to draw extensive media coverage thanks to publisher William Randolph Hearst and Irish journalist Michael Davitt. \n  \nREGISTER HERE
