Giving Back to Our Local Community
The Shalom Shuk thrift shop’s mission is to build bridges between peoples of all religious, social and economic backgrounds. This is done through exchanges that foster dignity and respect. We offer equal access for all to high-quality used clothing and goods while promoting self-respect and self-sufficiency. In pursuit of Shalom Shuk’s primary mission, we provide basic household goods and clothing to recently arrived immigrants and people in need.
The Shalom Shuk is a marketplace where all people involved are respected. Doing business at the Shalom Shuk, whether making donations or purchasing goods, strengthens our connections with each other. We partner with both individuals in our community and agencies that give donations and purchase merchandise. Examples of groups we have worked with:
- Boys and Girls Club
- Burlington Food Shelf
- Burlington Housing Authority
- Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) (Burlington)
- Community Health Centers teen clinic
- Dress for Success (Burlington)
- Feeding Chittenden
- Howard Center
- Joint Urban Ministry Project (JUMP) (Burlington)
- King Street Center
- Outright VT
- Pathways
- Safe Harbor
- Sara Holbrook
- SCHIP’s Treasure (Shelburne)
- Spectrum
- The Clothes Exchange (Chittenden County)
- Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program (VRRP) (statewide)
Each year with the help of our partner agencies, the Shalom Shuk distributes thousands of dollars worth of vouchers for free goods. In addition, each year a portion of the sales from the Shuk is donated to local charities serving the Burlington area.
