We shared the job description for OZ’s “cantor or musical rabbi” with Hebrew College in December. In late January, we posted the role to Cantors Assembly, which is the international association of hazzanim affiliated with Conservative Judaism. We also asked Cantor Jessica to share the post with her network.
Since then, we’ve received a number of applications from a wide range of very compelling candidates. Our process begins with a thorough review of an applicant’s material by the whole Committee, looking at their academic background, ordination, and job history, listening to musical samples ranging from High Holiday recordings to niggunim and tot Shabbat sing-a-longs, and reading samples of divrei Torah. Candidates who advance past this screen are brought in for Zoom interviews.
The Committee is actively conducting these interviews, with a few more this coming week. We will narrow down to a short list of two candidates to bring to OZ for community weekends in March.
The Committee has been struck by the compassion, enthusiasm, and musical inspiration of a number of candidates, and looks forward to the community having a chance to meet them.
