Marketplace of Peace
The Shalom Shuk or Marketplace of Peace is Ohavi Zedek Synagogue’s thrift shop serving the local community and dedicated to helping new Americans and the underprivileged. Located in the historic barn located on the OZ property behind our main building, the Shalom Shuk was renovated in 2010 catapulting the old “Thrift Shop” into the spotlight as the premiere destination for gently used clothes, household wares, and other assorted small goods in Burlington.
The Shalom Shuk is open Sunday – Friday from 11:00 AM to 3:45 PM (except on Jewish holidays). We are closed Saturdays.
Giving Back to Our Local Community
The Shalom Shuk’s mission is to build bridges between peoples of all religious, social and economic backgrounds, through exchanges that foster dignity and respect and offer equal access for all to high-quality used clothing and household goods, while promoting self-respect and self-sufficiency. In pursuit of Shalom Shuk’s primary mission, we provide basic household goods and clothing to recently arrived immigrants and people in need.
The Shalom Shuk is a marketplace where all people involved are respected. Doing business at the Shalom Shuk, whether making donations or purchasing goods, strengthens our connections with each other. We partner with both individuals in our community and agencies that give donations and purchase merchandise. These include at the time of this writing:
- Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) (Burlington)
- Dress for Success (Burlington)
- Joint Urban Ministry Project (JUMP) (Burlington)
- SCHIP’s Treasure (Shelburne)
- Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program (VRRP) (statewide)
- Wake Robin (Shelburne)
- The Clothes Exchange (Chittenden County)
- One More Time (Montpelier)
- Platos Closet
- Spectrum youth
- The Howard Center
- King St Youth Ctr
- Safe Harbor
- Outright VT
- Community Health Centers teen clinic
Each year with the help of our partner agencies the Shalom Shuk distributes thousands of dollars worth of vouchers, for free goods. In addition each year a portion of the revenue from the Shalom Shuk is donated to local charities serving the Burlington area. In 2018 we will be giving to the following: Spectrum Youth, Steps, Safe Harbor Wet Shelter, Cots, Burlington Food shelf and B&G CLUB.
The Shalom Shuk gratefully accepts donations of gently used clothing, jewelry and household goods between the hours of 11AM and 4PM Sunday – Friday.
