The Climate Fresk is a global climate education project; and we are happy to have one of its leaders, Myriam Darmoni Charbit, host this session.  Myriam and her husband Denis have been at OZ in the past several months, while visiting Vermont from Israel. One of Myriam’s goals is to engage faith communities into climate awareness and climate action.

Our program at OZ will be a 2 hour and 45 minute workshop for adults (16 and up) taking place from 9:00 to 11:45 am.  (Bagels and coffee provided!)

The Fresk (which translates to ‘fresco’ or ‘mural’) is a science-based (IPCC) workshop with 42 cards (adults) that nurtures collaboration, collective intelligence and active learning.

Up to twelve participants will play together around a table with one facilitator (that can facilitate up to 2 tables).  At first, the participants arrange the cards according to Causes and Consequences (5 sets of cards for adults and 3 for youth).  During the second part of the workshop they decorate their “fresk” for anchoring the new knowledge and reflect on their feelings; finally they brainstorm on which actions they want to take on a personal and collective level, following what they have learned.

It is a powerful way to raise awareness about the Climate crisis and to  engage the participants to take action while reducing climate anxiety and generating optimism in collective action.

Here is an article about the Climate fresk published in the New York Times in August.

For example, there is a vibrant community of “Freskers” in Boston and hundreds of students at Harvard University have already participated. Myriam is very motivated to spread this powerful educational tool in Vermont, and especially at OZ. Attahed is a one pager with more information.

Note the following are future opportunities:

  • Dana would be delighted to talk with community members about Environmental values in Judaism, Islam and Christianity. Basically, the idea is that we need to adapt the climate “narrative” to various groups and that faith groups will listen more carefully if the “climate story” is not only science based but also refers to religious values/norms such as the idea of stewardship.
  •  And, there is a 2-hour teen version of this project that a facilitator could lead for our Nadav teens!
